To wrap up Day 2 of the MLB Draft on Monday, the New York Yankees selected 21-year-old shortstop Ben Cowles with the 303rd overall pick. Cowles graduated from Newark in 2018 before moving on to play college baseball at Maryland.

Cowles comes in at 6-foot-1 and 180 pounds, and spent the last three seasons at Maryland where he broke out his junior season leading the Big 10 with 18 home runs in only 48 games. The Newark, NY native had managed just six homers combined across his first two seasons as a Terrapin.
Having started in all 35 games this season, Cowles is hitting .298 with 19 extra-base hits and 40 RBI. He has worked 14 base on balls and has an on-base percentage of .428.
A two-time Finger Lakes East Player of the Year, he hit .512 with an on-base percentage of .650 for Mike McGavisk’s Newark Reds in 2018. Cowles earned Section V Class B Player of the Year as well as Class B First-Team All-State honors.
Maryland (21-14) hosts Purdue this weekend. The following series at Michigan will include games On Friday and Saturday that are scheduled to be televised on the Big Ten Network.
