Around Amherst: Day of Recollection is pause to remember COVID’s toll

AMHERST The town is joining a nationwide Day of Recollection to honor those who have lost their lives after contracting COVID-19.
On Jan. 19 at 5:30 p.m., the town will mark the reflection on the pandemic with the ringing of the bells at Town Hall.
Town Manager Paul Bockelman is being directed to have town buildings illuminated during the hour-long remembrance period.
This week the Town Council adopted a proclamation remembering the more than 350,000 in America who have died with COVID-19 and honoring the 20 million infected with the coronavirus.

Family Outreach of Amherst wants to extend a heartfelt thank you to Paul Bockelman, Mary Beth Ogulewicz, Claudia Pazmany and Gabrielle Gould for forging a unique collaboration to diminish food insecurity in our community.
The newly established December Dinner Delights initiative is another great example of Amherst stepping up to make lemonade out of lemons amid the pandemic, at an especially tender time.
Eleven restaurants Fresh Side, Osteria Vespa, Pasta e Basta, Kaiju BBQ, El Camalito, Wheelhouse Catering, Miss Saigon, Shanghai Gourmet, Henion Bakery, Bistro 63 and La Veracruzana are each providing 100 meals to 30 FOA families during the month of December.
