area is in a rugged terrain. firefighters can not get to it or it is not worth risking their safety because there are no homes. that is why the fire is growing, because they are letting it burn and why all the smoke is being created. the fire burning on mt. diablo nearly doubled overnight growing to 1,500 acres. firefighters expect it to get bigger before they get control. >> i feel confident that we will be able to get a control on this, probably not today, certainly not today, it will be probably a good couple of days before we can get our arms wrapped around this. >> jack wilson feels confident enough that he decided not to evacuate. he was up all night. >> very intense. i am watching it. >> cal fire had a crew and helped me to get things organized. >> the smoke coming off the fire looks daunting. the response looks intend with 500 firefighters on the line and 70 engines. jack wilson is feeling the heat. his kids and grandkids are calling from across the country but he wants to stay with this new home he built himself. >> kim had a sleepless but safe night and this morning decided to show her gratitude. >> they have been phenomenal. you could not ask for a better response. >> 100 homes are threatened by the fire but firefighters and residents have a calm about them today. they are feeling good about the calm weather. there is no wind this morning. >> if the wind blows this way it could be trouble. >> he has to check the win outside because the internet is gone because a communications tower did burn in this fire. one firefighter has been hurt during the fight but is expected to be okay and an outbuilding has been destroyed and he doesn't have any internet access. homes and residents are safe. firefighters tell me they feel like they have a good plan in place to surround this fire, put a box around it, but they say it will take some time and a lot of hard work. outside of clayton for abc7 news. >> evacuation situation extended to cover many states in clayton easting upper and lower trail road and east trail road. 100 homes in clayton are threatened. the red cross has a center for evacuees at the clayton library and those with horses can go do walnut creek or the contra costa county horseman association in concord. with more on the impact on new developments we will continue our coverage with abc7 news reporter matt keller in dublin. >> this is base catch with 14 strike teams arriving. they are needed. people in the area were evacuated as they wait to find out if they have a home to return to. >> letting sleeping dogs lie was easier said than don for arthur armstrong. he and his wife came to the red cross shelter at clayton community library after evacuated if their home. they were the only ones there overnight but decided to sleep if their cars with their 60's dogs because animals were not allowed inside. >> things happen and we had to do this. >> your dogs were happy you slept with them? >> well...as happy as they commodity. >> 100 homes are in the line of fire. animals were also in danger so a call for help went out. >> friend put something out on facebook and said if you have a trailer, come help. >> they did, 30 horses from the rehab ranch and other animals were picked up and evacuation centers have been set up. another concern for both the animals and people is the smoke the on the other side of mt. diablo in blackhawk, no serious concerns about the flames but the smoke is lingering. >> can you smell it? >> i can smell it, not so much, i walked out this morning at 7:00 and i could smell it. it is bad. >> that smoke is visible here in dublin/pleasanton and firefighters making the home for the foreseeable future working 24 hours on, 24 hours off until the fire is out. >> thank you. the temperatures are not helping the fire-fighting efforts on the mt. diablo fire. meteorologist mike nicco joins us. >> there a smoke advisory for contra costa, alameda and part of santa clara county and the wind will shift from moving from northwest to southeast to north to south along the diabolo range so we will see the smoke moving on down and take care of the parts of the areas in the form of poor air quality. here is live doppler 7 hd, notice the radar return, what we are seeing is the smoke from the fire headed northwest to southeast. and if you come down this is mt. diablo thrust fault right here separating the fire right now from blackhawk in the eastern section of danville. last night the winds were coming from the northwest and notice how they move around both sides and they swirled and that spread the fire and not only is it burning on the east but the south where i could see it from my house. this morning i saw the fire on way to work. >> the fire can be seen from all around and here is a picture from our camera in the oakland hills area. you can see the smoke is being pushed. the fire is sending up a giant plume of smoke and leader is the view of it from walnut creek and from our camera. in san francisco, across the bay from the fire, you can see the smoke from the tower on mount sutro quite an imposing and frightening sight. >> the fire now has closed parts of mt. diablo state park. these are images from 7:00 this morning from sky 7. fire crews have been working to keep flames from the lookout tower at the summit of mt. diablo and they are trying to protect all of the communications equipment that senators television station and radio and cell phones and electric am lines. >> viewers have been sending us dramatic photos of the fire on mt. diablo and we will show you. this was sent to us and you can see the fire burning in several different areas with smoke filling the sky. another viewer snapped this photo from the bypass in brentwood, the orange glow of the flames and another picture shows the fire from skyline boulevard on the peninsula so, again, across the bay you can uphold your photos at abc7news.com. this is not the first time a major wildfire has hit. august 2, 1977 two lightning bolts sparked a fire and 6,000 acres burned in a matter of days. the entire north side of the mountain was blackened. 700 firefighters battled that trapped in the home. firefighters got them out with the help of police. all these residents were taken to the hospital. the house was gutted. two firefighters suffered moderate bones and smoke inhalation. >> a veteran diver lost his life searching for an oakland man believed drowned while swimming. he is identified at kevin smith yesterday while trying to free an underwater remote-operated vehicle being used in the seven. the san francisco police department sent the vehicle to help in the search for an 18-year-old seen on friday morning when he juneed in the lake to help another friend struggling in the water. >> new this morning, police have identified a man who fell and died at candelstick park yesterday just before the 49ers game. the victim was 32-year-old kevin hayes who fell from a foot bridge on the south side of the stadium at jamestown avenue. it happened at 1:30 right around kickoff time. witnesses say hayes appeared to have been intoxicated. the game between the 49ers and, paers was the final season opener at candelstick before they move to the new stadium built in santa clara. >> there is a warning from syria's president assad and what he says may happen in [ male announcer ] helping you -- now that's what's important to us. >> this is the wildfire burning on mt. diablo from the east bay hills camera. the air quality management agency has issues a smoke advisory for the bay area residents in contra costa, alameda and santa clara county spreading all over the place. the meteorologist mike nicco will be along in a moment with the full forecast. >> mike, does it look like the south is going south? >> right, more southwest than south but some of this is filtering to the south so places like danville and san ramon and dublin all the way as it funnels to the sunol grade could come out and head to santa clara so that is what we are thinking and the winds shifted overnight they were in the northeast which would push it to the southwest but those did move a little bit and most of the smoke has been along mt. diablo range with a lot of windmills out there and it has been pushing across the altamont pass and toward address and it is filtering down long with the rim fire smoke toward fresno and bakersfield. now, done -- shows the clouds along the coast are going to be not so stubborn as yesterday but we do not have radar returns and no flight arrival delays. we will head back to mt. diablo at 72 degrees which is down, about 78 overnight, and humidity has come up and the air is turning over at 25 percent and winds are the big push gusting up to 24. this afternoon, winds continuing to gust from the northwest at 25 miles per hour, and high temperature in the lower elevations we will be near 90 degrees and humidity will start to drop this afternoon in that 10 to 10 to 20 degree range. not a lot of smoke and here is the rim fire smoke and here are the low clouds along the coast you request see a lot of things we are looking at on our visible satellite. temperatures in the mid-80's to the north of mt. diablo and you can see walnut creek is near 90 and danville near 86 to the firefighters are going to be dealing with the warm conditions in the lower level where the fire came down mt. diablo and headed toward the valley early this morning. right now, 72 in hayward and 72 in mountain view and 75 in san jose and san francisco is at 64 and low-to-mid 70's throughout the north bay. as we look at the smoke, the interesting thing this morning is the smoke was above the boundary layer the area of cool and stable air. if the smoke was trapped in there it would have flooded the valleys. notice how we getting more smoke down near the ground and that is the case as we head through the morning hours and that smoke that is trapped, it will stay there overnight so hot inland is the big story. cooler air tonight and back to average on wednesday. the seven-day forecast shows 80's inland until you get to the east bay where we will have the 90's to near 100 today and mid-70's to low 80's around the bay and mid-60's along the coast to upper 60's in san francisco. tuesday we drop one degree at the beaches to six degrees inland and again on wednesday, and back to average on wednesday and they will hold steady this thursday, friday, saturday and sunday. it is up around 3,000' and there is no rain in the forecast. >> thank you, mike. >> still ahead we will get an update on the wildfire, it looks huge like it is going for days. >> later today, the second season of "katie" kickoff with a rapper lil' wayne and a surprise legend today at 3:00 right here >> coming up at 4:00, today is the three-year anniversary of the explosion and fire in san bruno and we will go to the neighborhood and how the rebuilding is going. at 5:00, the important decision that has to be made in the case of a san francisco woman hit and killed at a city park. >> an update on wildfire burning at mt. diablo, pictures of the fire that has doubled in size and burned 1,500 acres. smoke and ash are a problem and mike is getting updates that ash is falling and firefighters have it 10 percent contained and there are evacuations in place. we will keep it posted and updated for you at abc7news.com. clear ♪ [cheers and applause] >> yo! >> the war supports al qaeda. >> will the attacks be based in the middle east if there's an air strike? >> suspect anything. secretary of state john kerry shot back. >> so the evidence is powerful. and the question for all of us is, what are we going to do about it? >> reporter: the president is trying to make the hard sell to congress and the american people. late last night, a surprise visit to a dinner republican senators were having with the vice president. later today, he'll sit down for six national television interviews, hoping to convince the nearly 6 in 10 america whose oppose air strikes that it is in america's interest to respond to syria's use to chemical weapons. tomorrow, he will head to capitol hill, and later that night, he'll deliver a nationally televised primetime address. >> good evening. >> reporter: even hillary clinton is joining in the effort. she'll show her support in a previously scheduled speech at the white house today. >> congress, most americans oppose missile strikes in syria. >> reporter: the president's usual supporters are expressing doubts. the live ral group, /* moveon.org is running tv ads to convince the president not to go ahead with the strikes. absolutely none, george. the abc news vote count in the house is worse. we now count 231 members of the house saying they'll vote no or likely to vote no. that's more than enough to defeat this resolution. in the senate, it's much more closely divided. most senators still undecided. george, as you know, the first test vote will come in the senate on wednesday. >> and diane will be speaking to president obama tonight on "world news." let's get to the morning news from josh. >> we'll again with the deadly nfl sunday on the first season. witnesses say a man appeared to be intoxicated when he fell to the sidewalk below. meantime in indianapolis, two people there were hurt after the colts' game when a railing gave way, but we can tell you they are both okay. and there was this, bleachers collapsing at a university of maryland soccer game. thankfully no injuries reported here either. meanwhile, inspectors in connecticut are trying to determine why a popular carnival ride malfunctioned yesterday, slamming to a halt. many of the riders were thrown into each other in midair. the ride, a rotating swing called the zoomer was packed with children when witnesses say it jolted to a stop. >> i heard this crash of all this metal and all the seats clicking together. i looked to my left and i saw the swing ride had collapsed. >> reporter: as the ride lost power, it stopped turning. the riders on board kept moving. colliding into each other. >> people running in to try to get kids out. two kids on the floor. >> reporter: connecticut state police say 18 people were injured. almostal of them children. >> we won't allow our kids go on the rides again. 13 people taken to the hospital. only one admitted for treatment. the company that provided the ride blamed a mechanical malfunction. and said it would cooperate with an investigation. the company says state officials had just inspected that ride last friday. a wildfire near san francisco in the east bay of the zpraens area. it's forced people in 75 homes to flee. the fire around mt. diablo state park is only 10% contained at this hour. a battle over the future of the internet gets started today. oral arguments get under way as verizon challenges the fcc's push to keep internet pipelines open to everyone equally. some internet service providers want corporations to pay for faster access. an unwelcome visitor to a san diego block party. it is actually exactly as it appears, a panda-shaped hot air balloon making an emergency landing, and as you can see, narrowly missing homes in the process. we may have seen the last flight of this panda-shaped hot air balloon. and finally, the folks in milton, west virginia, are apparently in very good hands. take a look at this. firefighters rushed to this house. there was a fire there. they were shocked to see they were not the first responders on the scene. both batman and captain america had come to the rescue, saving that young little guy. the two men were in costume for an event at a nearby american legion post mentoring a group of children. they saw. they respond. they were heroes. literal and figurative. >> imagine the sighs of those kids when they showed up? >> no, i can't. parents have a lot of 'splaining to do. now we move on. to a chilling confession that has gone viral. powerful words from a young man admitting in an online video that he killed a man while driving drunk. he's expected to be charged this week. this morning, the victim's family is reacting. linsey davis has that story for us. >> reporter: initially, the man's face is blurred. his voice distorted. >> i ended up going the wrong way down a highway and struck a car and killed a man. >> reporter: then he reveals himself. >> my name is matthew cordle. on june 22, 2013, i hit and killed vincent canzani. >> reporter: in the 3 1/2 minute video, cordle explains what happened after a night of drinking with friends in ohio and pledges to take responsibility for the death of canzani. a 61-year-old photographer and navy vet. later today, he's expected to be charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. he confessed through the website called because i said i would.com. his video, which ends with him asking viewers not to drink and drive, has gotten more than 1 million views. >> he has an insurmountable amount of guilt. he doesn't want to cause other families the harm that he's done. >> reporter: the family of canzani is torn. his two estranged daughters say they believe cordal only recorded the message for publicity. canzani's ex-wife disagrees. >> if he wanted a lesser sentence, he could have lied. which many, many people do. he didn't choose to. he chose to tell the truth. >> reporter: meantime, his attorney says he hopes his message leads to change. >> he wants the spotlight to be on the issues about drinking and driving. >> i'm begging you. please don't drink and drive. >> reporter: just to be clear, cordle was already under investigation for the crash before he came forward. he's expected to be charged later today with aggravated vehicular homicide. a sentence that carries up to eight years in prison. regardless what you feel his motivation was, he does have a very good message to people to not drink and drive. now to the royal mistake at buckingham palace. anxiety high after an intruder got going through security. that created an uncomfortable moment for prince andrew. he was confronted by police and demanded his i.d. while out for an evening stroll. abc's bianna golodryga has all of the details. >> reporter: scotland yard is not commenting on what is now being called a security blunder of royal proportions. two armed police stopping prince andrew in the queen's garden. british tabloids report that officers ordered a livid duke of york to put hands up and get to the ground. >> you have to put a question mark over the security. the bliss will certainly be red-faced about it. >> reporter: in an apology to the queen's son, police say no weapons were drawn and no force was used. over the weekend, prince andrew said he accepted the apology. despite his good humor, it's not a laughing matter. >> they demand an explanation. and demands someone to say how could this happen in 2013? >> reporter: just days earlier, an intruder was stopped inside buckingham palace after scaling a 12-foot barbed wire wall. before being stopped, he kicked the door in where the area near where the queen's priceless coronation jewels are currently on display. the breach is especially troubling because the palace is supposed to have multiple layers of security. >> and they are there to ensure that both outer and inner cordons are enforced and reacted to. >> reporter: many are wondering if those defenses, at what is supposed to be one of the most secure buildings in the world, are really as secure as they should be. now, one note, this was the most serious palace breach in more than 30 years. in 1982, a man and climbed a drainpipe near the queen's bedroom. that may have been more serious. i think, more embarrassing. >> i can't believe the first one is possible. thank you, bianna. to medical news now. a study released overnight that finds women who do not get mammograms make up a significant portion of breast cancer deaths. this includes younger women who follow the current government guide lines which do not recommend routine testing before the age of 50. dr. richard besser is here with much more. let's dive into the study. what does it say? >> this fuels the controversy. the study out of harvard looked at women who died from breast cancer in the 1990s and died from breast cancer. 609 of those women. 71% had never had a screening mammogram. half of them were under 50. if those women had been screened earlier, it would have been detected earlier. and lives would have been saved. >> 2009, a group came out and said, wait until the age of 50. a big uproar about that. this is so confusing. to a lot of people, rich. >> i spoke to the woman that led that panel. she said, this is not going to change anything. the question is, if you had screened those women younger, would it have saved their lives? young women tend to have more aggressive breast cancer. would the early screening have changed the outcome for them? how many women do you have to screen to save one life? >> what is the downside to screening early? >> well, the concern is early, early screening, you're going to detect a lot of tumors that would have caused no problem. put women through the treatment and biopsies they didn't need. the feeling is it's a personal decision that should be covered by insurance. >> what is your recommendation? her little monsters are so well behaved every time they're here. we enjoy that. we're going to turn all that energy to the shocking murder mystery. one high school girl's confession about her best friend. why two teens are being charged. and a medical marvel for you. a tv anchor who fought back from death after a life-threatening illness. the one thing he says kept him fighting to stay alive. >> an amazing story. then, also, the youngest miss america ever crowned is now speaking out this morning about her surprising battle with depression. >> a whole lot coming up. we begin with the disturbing murder case out of west virginia. two 16-year-olds have been arrested for stabbing a third friend to death. one girl has confessed. the other will be tried as an adult. paula faris brings us the story. >> reporter: they were supposed to be best friends for life. sheila eddy, rachel shoaf, and skylar neese. but last summer, one of those bff's lives was cut tragically short. skylar was stabbed and left for dead. >> the only thing i care about is they get what's coming to them. >> reporter: july 2011, 16-year-old skylar, a student at university high school in west virginia, went missing. surveillance footage shows her sneaking out of her family's home in the dead of night. after months of searching, no sign of the teen. a stunning turn in the case. close friend rachel shoaf comes forward, providing the location of skylar's dead body. the one-time best friend admits to maliciously and intentionally causing the death of skylar neese by stabbing her and causing fatal injuries. but the story doesn't end there. one best friend admitted to murder. the other, sheila eddy, comforted the family. she tweeted, rest easy, skylar. you'll always be my best friend. i miss you more than you could ever know. but according to prosecutor, that tweet was just a smoke screen. this week, she, too, will be charged with skylar's murder. >> if you're innocent, you don't cover up something for nine month. you don't come to somebody's house the next day after you murder somebody and try to walk up and down the street looking for the person you murdered. >> reporter: shiela eddy has not yet entered a plea and her lawyers have issued a statement saying it's premature to comment on this case at this time. now, skylar neese's family is asking how this ended in murder. for "good morning america," paula faris, abc news, new york. >> let's get more on this from chief legal affairs anchor dan abrams. the details mind-boggling. she's pretending to be part of the search for months? >> it's an awful story. starting with the fact that you've got two friends accused of stabbing, literally, taking her out somewhere. picking her up in the car, going out somewhere and stabbing her. >> couldn't be more premeditated. >> no. one pleading guilty of second-degree murder. not first-degree murder. this is where age comes into play. is it adult versus juvenile? in the state of west virginia, when you're talking about murder anyone over the age of 14 is supposed to automatically get transferred to adult court. the leniency is to come with the sentence. prosecutors are going the recommend 20 years. >> isn't that light? >> considering the crime, yeah. i think that's because of the age, likely the fact that she's pleading guilty, as well. it will be interesting to see what happens with the second one. she was adjudicated so far in juvenile court. that's now been transferred to adult court. the question now is going to be does she plead guilty? does she go to trial and have her friend testify against her? you have heard the parents say again and again that the last thing they want to do is revisit every detail of their daughter -- you can imagine this, right? the last thing they want is to have to relive this. i think the parents would appreciate some sort of plea here. we'll see if that happens. >> thank you, dan. now to the stunning alligator hunt in mississippi. the annual event coming to an end today. and another record was set this weekend. this massive gator tips the scales at 741.5 pounds. abc's gio benitez went into the waters of the mississippi with some of the now former record-holders. >> reporter: it looks like something out of "jurassic park." this 723-pound, 13-foot alligator, was caught in the swamps of mississippi by an every day family. led by one tough mom. a paralegal by day. alligator hunter by night. >> the alligator queen. >> reporter: they wrangled this massive beast during mississippi's ten-day alligator hunt. 920 people chosen to catch two gators each. the state says to help control the population. gators were once endangered. now, biologist ricky flint, the hunt coordinator, says there are too many. for many people here, alligators are problems on their property? 100 structures are threatened and those homes have been evacuated. we have live team coverage starting with terry mcsweeney live on the fire lines for you. >> reporter: one minute the flames were up the mountain, then came strong gusts of wind and suddenly they were all the way down to morgan territory road. morgan territory road is a fire break. it has to be held. firefighters scrambled to stop the flames. kevin lewis lives on that road and was not waiting for the order. >> we are on our way up. last night i was up watching the spurs and stuff keeping an eye on it seeing where it was going to go. i saw this flare up and told the family that we're going out. if the house burns down, whatever. >> reporter: 700 five-day forecasts are battling the morgan fire and dozens of them quickly set up posts trying to contain it. thousands of acres have burned and hundreds more went up tonight. >> we are expecting we will be losing about 6 to 8,000 acres. >> reporter: at the clayton fire station the problem was not fire but water. citizens have brought in so much to help the fire crews they don't need more but it keeps coming. >> water and snacks for the firefighters and anybody who needs it. >> reporter: the fire is burning mostly in very rough terrain. air drops are the means of attack and they will resume after daybreak. the crews are hoping to contain, control and turn the fire back on itself. the winds helped that today. there have been four minor injuries and there are concerns about power lines. seven homes have lost power and power lines are in the path of the flames. back out here live you can see the fire crews who have come in down morgan territory road. this was a traffic jam of fire trucks on this road. they know that if the winds come back things could change here in a heart beat. terry mcsweeney, nbc bay area news. it has been a while since we have had a fire of this magnitude on mount diablo. 1977 to be exact. these are pictures from that fire which burned 6,000 acres. this happened in 1977 in less than 24 hours. lightning sparked that fire at a time when california was dealing with a drought. the flames are on the mountain. live pictures from the chopper. but the smoke as you might know or you might breathe it is in the valleys. plenty of smoke in the tri-valley and santa clara county. there is a smoke advisory for contra costa, alameda and santa clara counties. a lot of people complaining of breathing problems and eye irritation. >> reporter: the red cross set up an evacuation shelter here at the clayton library. and someone says it is scary seeing the flames up close. but the fire is affecting a lot of people far from the flames. spending smoke their way. >> very scary. everything you work for all your life. >> reporter: with the fire approaching, a park ranger told scott to leave the curry creek rv park fast. >> it's an evacuation and got to go. so i had one minute to grab my things, basically my wallet and phone. >> reporter: he is spending the night at the clayton library. the red cross turned it into an evacuation center and shelter for people forced off mount diablo. >> being on the mountain is scary. >> reporter: this woman lives in danville and she took pictures of the smoke billowing toward her house. >> getting our pictures and dvds together of the family. any valuables. but i kind of just brought it downstairs. >> reporter: that smoke has lots of people concerned. you can see a thin layer of ash on parked cars in danville. some say it looked like snow. >> stopped and had lunch outside and in the short time, there was flakes falling on our black pants. >> the ash coming down slowly looked like snowflakes. >> reporter: asthma sufferers are staying inside. with the smoke advisory in effect all city sporting activities have been cancelled. p.e. and recess are inside until the air clears. >> a lot of things in the air and right now it's a good thing to keep them indoors. >> reporter: schools will be checking the air quality again tomorrow and deciding if it is an inside day. and as for the red cross shelter, it will stay open as long as it's needed. >> thank you, jean. let's check in with jeff ranieri on the weather conditions. what is tomorrow going to bring? >> the wind will continue to kick up. that is the biggest problem for firefighters. they keep talking about getting access to the fire. they are fighting between 1 to 3,000 foot elevations on the east side of mount diablo. let's look at right now through tomorrow morning. that is the onshore cooling fog coming back. 10 to 15 miles an hour coming from the west. that's the wind that we want because again that is increasing the humidity. here is the forecast. next 24 hours will see temperatures cooling off. we'll have upper 80s to 90 degrees. humidity, 25 to 35%. so instead of single digits and teens we are going to add a bit of moisture to the atmosphere. the winds hook look to be the b and most improved by thursday. that's the highest humidity for the week in that region and winds that slacken up to 10 and 20 miles an hour. the next two days is a minute by minute situation for folks there in and around this fire. it will be important to watch that very closely. >> thank you very much, jeff. here is a look at the fires burning across the state. the morgan fire is one of ten current fires in california. and that includes the rim fire, yosemite. that is now 80% contained. if you see smoke or flames, snap a photo and e-mail it to us. you can post photos to our facebook and twitter page as well. he is accused of groping a sedated patient. a former hospital employee faces charges of sexual battery. he is a former employee of stanford hospital. police say he touched a female patient inappropriately during a hospital day? february. they don't think there are additional victims. follow up to a debt of a 49ers fan. he was kevin hayes of heyward. he fell from this elevated walkway outside the park right before the game was getting started. san francisco police are investigating. right now they say it was an accident but acknowledge that alcohol might have played a role. this is the 49ers final season at candlestick before moving to santa clara. now to the latest on the crisis in syria. protesters came out to rally public support this evening. dozens turned out in sunnyvale. the goal? to send a message to president obama that war in syria or even a military strike is not the answer. they hope that the president will find a diplomatic seclusion. a senate vote to authorize the use of military force has been delayed. the senate majority leader says that they are considering an international proposal. the president called the proposal a positive development that could circumvent the need for u.s. military intervention in syria. the president will visit with senate democrats and republicans tomorrow before he addresses the nation. you can watch the president's address right here on nbc bay area tomorrow at 6:00 in the evening. three years ago tonight, a moment that changed the bay area. a devastating scene as a gas explosion levelled a san bruno neighborhood. the people and soul of the city are trying to move forward. it hasn't been easy. tonight there was a gathering to remember those who died and celebrate the families who have rebuilt and are returning home. >> you just have to look around. the beautiful homes here. people have established themselves once again in the neighborhood. we'll have new families we're going to recognize tonight. four more that have rebuilt. a developer is going to take over ten more lots and we'll have a vibrant community here. >> there is optimism in san bruno. the explosion killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. investigations proved a series of mistakes by pg&e caused this blast. today we learned that the state and san matteo county attorney's office will not be filing charges. but federal prosecutors could file charges and there are hundreds of civil lawsuits to be settled. after the break, the secret is out. an exclusive with san bruno's mayor and choice language from one of the state's most powerful. we investigate next. a dramatic 911 call by george zimmerman's estranged wife. and apple anticipation. we are on the eve. apple's campus tonight as they prepare to make a major announcement. what you can expect. is it the next big thing? a plan on the western span of the bay bridge is moving forward. the idea will go before the state senate. opponents say it's inappropriate to name the span after someone who is still living. supporters say that brown's lifelong support of the bay area make him well worthy of the honor. we mentioned it has been a difficult night for the people of san bruno. for the first time we are learning the details of a closed-door meeting between the president of the puc and san bruno's mayor. >> our chief investigator, tony kovaleski joins us now. you have been tracking this for a long time. >> they are speaking out for the first time tonight ten months after that closed door meeting. the two leaders questioning michael peavy's arrogance, aggression and choice of words. i've never witnessed something like that before. >> reporter: it happened inside the offices of the california public utilities division. >> his actions were unprofessional and inappropriate. >> we sat down and the first thing he said was this is your meeting. you called it. what do you want? >> reporter: what was that tone? >> the tone was arrogance. i was a little surprised. >> reporter: san bruno's mayor and city mayor called the meeting in december to discuss pg&e's penalty and safe plan. it was two years after the pine line explosion killed eight people, injured more than 60 and levelled a neighborhood. >> we said what you did in front of my building was bull [ bleep ] and i was taken aback. he was referring to press conferences. >> what message did you take away? >> well, i guess, for me, it was shocking. s was embarrassing. and it probably reinforced the arrogance that we knew was there already. >> mr. peavy displayed a level of behavior that i have never before witnessed in my 30-plus years of public service. >> the city and the public utilities commission have had a contention relationship since that explosion. in october of last year, san bruno residents called for the removal of president peavy. >> mr. peavy has an interest in the utilities company's interests rather than the public. >> and shortly after, kathy launched an online petition calling on governor brown to remove peavy. >> that says that the people are demanding change. we need the governor to change the head of the puc so that we can feel safe. >> reporter: then the san bruno city council unanimously passed a resolution calling for peavy's ouster. >> the city council joins its residents in calling for the immediate remove of the commission president. >> san bruno leaders have called multiple press conferences, questioning peavy's leadership. tactics that have ruffled feathers and led to the use of what city leaders call choice words at the meeting in december. >> did you expect anything like that. >> not at all. >> this is a meeting with the president of the public units commission. an elected mayor representing a city that was devastated. >> it appeared as if he allowed his emotions to overcome his sensibilities. >> did this cross the line? >> i believe it did. >> reporter: during the three years since the explosion, the mayor and city manager have identified failures within the commission and questionable behavior by its president. they detailed those in this memo to the investigator unit. does mr. peeve you owe you an apology for his behavior? >> that's mr. peavy's call. with the arrogance that is there i would question the sincerity of the policy. president peavy has declined our request to ask him question. his poeks person said in a statement that the san bruno related cases are in the hands of an administrative law judge. >> thank you, tony. >> if you have a tip for tony kovaleski, give us a call at 888-996-tips or an e-mail. let's go back to the breaking news. 700 firefighters still on the battle lines on the morgan fire of mount diablo. it has burned 4,000 ache source far. cries expect it will burn in the neighborhood of 6 to 8,000 acres. and the evacuate orders we told you about are still in effect. but the good news is no homes have been destroyed. >> let's bring in our chief meteorologist talking about the whaenging weather tonight especially the marine layer. >> that will have dramatic impacts. after 102 in livermore the marine layer is building up really strong. this is what the firefighters want. we are going to see things drop by about 5 to 8 degrees. therefore also increasing the humidity across the bay area. so a few good changes when it comes to the weather. beginning tomorrow with areas of cloud cover at the coastline and keep some stratus there threw 4:00 p.m. tomorrow. we will have sunny skies by the afternoon. and for the interior valleys the biggest thing to note here is that by 4:00 p.m. forecasting low 90s instead of 100s. so relief there. let's get to the hd sky camera network. we are fogged in right now. that is the main component of getting the cooler temperatures in our forecast. the wind as it moves in is producing sheets of drizzle across the golden gate bridge. so commuters tomorrow and bay bridge commuters may need the windshield wipers for a bit. the temperatures in the south bay going down 3 to 5 degrees throughout tomorrow's forecast. san jose is getting closer to the averages with 88 degrees. 89 in los gatos. low 90s in morgan hill and gilroy but better in evergreen. in the east bay where we had three days of triple digits we drop into the low 90s. it's also significant to note the air quality will be at moderate levels. some ash may be coming down from the fire. if you suffer from asthma it will be difficult in the ease bay. otherwise in san francisco the temperatures in the 60s to low 70s. overall the area high pressure that has been producing all this heat continues to push off to the north. that will help the temperatures to drop. the numbers are in the upper 80s to near 90s all the way through friday. no rain in the forecast. but by month six days until fall. and if the pattern goes that storm may have an easier time opening up this year. any kind of rainfall great news after one of the driest calendar years on record. we are back with a report on mammograms that is leading to a lot of debate. i want you to know stuff i want you to be kind. i want you to be smart. super smart. i want one thing in a doctor. to speak my language. i don't want you to look at the chart before you say hi...david. quiero que me hagas sentir segura. i want you to be awesome. that's the doctor i want. at kaiser permanente, we want you to choose the doctor that's right for you. find your perfect match at kp.org and thrive. the ground and from the air. reporter: by nightfall with over 800 acres burned, it is still hard to tell who is winning this firefight, man or mother nature. >> the fire started right here with, you know, a lot of fuel, a lot of potential for rapid spread because of slope. >> reporter: monday afternoon mount diablo erupted in flames looking more like a volcano with a huge plume of smoke in the air and 50 to 75 homes on the ground in the fire's path starting on sunday afternoon those residents told to lock unand leave immediately. >> especially on morgan territory road they have a long way to go for fire protection and they have a lot of animals in here, you can see there's a lot of fuel for the fires. so, yeah, it's a big concern. >> reporter: on the attack, 250 firefighters, dozens of fire trucks, a handful of aircraft, even a couple of bulldozers to do the heavy lifting. >> temperatures were very high and the fuel and topography on the back side of mount diablo is fairly extreme so those were the two primary factors that influenced the spread of this fire. >> reporter: the wildfire has burned a lot of land but hasn't done much damage to property only a cell phone tower so far. no homes burned, and nobody hurt. >> yeah. everybody is concerned and wants everyone to be safe, concerned for the safety of those fighting the fire. >> reporter: so there really hasn't been much wind overnight. that's been helping. but let me show you some of what is burning up on the side of the mountain. this is brown brittle brush. it is the fuel to the fire. and there is plenty of it. reporting from mount diablo, brian webb, kpix 5. >> fire crews are expected to resume aerial water drops over the fire after sunrise sometime after 7:00 this morning. now for the latest on the fire danger on mount diablo, brian? >> the danger is the fact that there's a lot of fuel up there and it is september one of the warmest months of the year but at least the temperatures while they're hot, the winds are not coming out of the driest possible direction. that's the best news. overnight winds were fairly light and right now only out of the northwest to about 10 miles per hour. the forecast is northwest 15 with highs from 90 to 98 and the humidity, you know, it's on the dry side 20 to 30%. but it's not that dry so we are getting good news by virtue of the fact the winds are not that high and dry. so those are two important things and the temperatures, you know, at the peak the temperature high today only 80 degrees so that is not so bad. and the winds aren't going to peak and will stay out of the northwest. that's all good news. >> can you remember the last time diablo -- >> it's been a long time. there's a lot of controversy about not having controlled burns on diablo and things like that so there's a lot of fuel for the fire. dozens of homes are evacuated because of the fire. evacuees were sent to check in at the clayton community library on clayton road where they could get help making arrangements. and there is a separate evacuation center available for animals. kpix 5 reporter elizabeth wenger reports from the fairgrounds in antioch. >> reporter: so far no animals have been brought to the fairgrounds but i talk to the organizer. they are saying they could see some by later on this morning. this is a country area so a lot of people have horses, cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, you name it and this fairgrounds is equipped to handle large and small animals. so as you mentioned about 75 homes, 75 families, have been evacuated because of the fire and smoke. additional evacuations came overnight. trail ride russelman park, east trail, upper trail and lower trail roads. since yesterday evacuations along oak hill lane, curry canyon road and the curry point area. so far only a handful of families is using the evacuation center at clayton library. evacuees we talked to say the fire was close but they are hopeful firefighters will gain the upper hand soon. >> we didn't see any flames. we saw a lot of smoke. we are thinking, you know, it's -- we were told about a quarter mile away. now, that seems a little close if the wind changes, it could be dangerous. but, you know, we didn't feel we were in a lot of danger actually. >> reporter: the fairgrounds have been on standby, the contra costa county fairgrounds, since they got a call from the sheriff's department last night around 6:00 that they may need to house some animals and they have been on standby overnight but so far nothing. that could change as day breaks. >> it seems the community is coming together to help. >> reporter: it is a really cool sight to see in situations like this. yeah, volunteers were there along the fireline yesterday and they had their horse trailers coming to transport any stranded animals that might need help. >> all right, elizabeth wenger live in antioch, thank you. now for a look at the roads shut down by the morgan fire. liza battalones? >> hi there. good morning, everybody. these road closures affect so many communities clayton, some folks also that are in the blackhawk area, brentwood, pleasanton, danville who normally use these back records to get to and through the area just keep in mind that marsh creek road is shut down between camino diablo and regency drive in clayton. also closed is morgan territory road. you can see the freeways in the area 680, 242 all in good shape. as we check on the bay bridge drive, westbound traffic still good leaving oakland heading into san francisco. we are seeing earlier backups as folks make that drive across the new bay bridge. so far none of those delays i- 80 fine through berkeley and emeryville. that's a look at the morning commute. president obama is taking his plans for syria to the people. he will address the nation tomorrow. meanwhile, syrian president bashar assad is speaking exclusively to cbs. here's what he had to say to charlie rose about the chemical attack that sparked this debate. >> what happened in your judgment? >> we are not in the area where they unleashed the chemical attack happened. we are not sure that anything happened. >> even at this date you're not sure, even though you have seen the videotape. >> our soldiers in another area were attacked chemically. our soldiers. they went to the hospital as casualties because of chemical weapons. but in the area where they said the government used chemical weapons, we only had video and we only have pictures and allegations. we're not social media administration or government. we are the government that deals with reality. >> and you can see more of that interview on "cbs this morning." it starts at 7:00 right here on kpix 5. some new video out of europe now. secretary of state john kerry is now in london as he continues to make the case for military action against syria. he says there's very strong evidence that the syrian government used chemical weapons against its people. kerry says he would be confident to take that evidence into any courtroom. he has been responding to comments from president assad that the allegations are a lie. the obama administration is facing a big challenge in winning congressional support for an syrian air strike even within the democratic party. house minority leader nancy pelosi has sent five letters to fellow democrats all in an effort to build support for a military strike. some in congress are staunchly opposed to any attack. this morning, bay area congressman eric swalwell sat down with our phil matier. he suggested he was going to vote with his constituents views in mind. >> my constituents across the board it's a firm solid no, why now, how is this in america's best interests? >> i think force should be the last option after you exhaust all other remedies. >> according to the latest poll, 36% of americans are in favor of air strikes on syria. happening today a trial gets under way in the shooting and crash in las vegas that killed a man from oakland. 26-year-old ammar harris faces murder charges. police say in february, harris opened fire opened fire on a maserati being driven by kenneth cherry, jr., in oakland. the car sped into an intersection rammed a taxi which burst into flames. cherry and two others died in the taxi. there will be public support for gun control at a church today. nancy skinner of berkeley and robben that of oakland have coauthored a bill that would ban kits that convert guns into assault-type weapons and make it illegal to buy large capacity magazines. they will hold a meeting today. the state senate could vote on whether to rename the western span of the bay bridge after willie brown. some say it's inappropriate because there's a senate policy against naming roads for people who are still alive. the "san francisco chronicle" where brown is a columnist has editorialized against the move. but some state lawmakers support it. 5:10. a sunny afternoon at a festival in connecticut took a disastrous turn when a ride malfunctioned. as cbs reporter jericka duncan reports, more than a dozen children were injured. >> reporter: connecticut state police are investigating what went wrong when a popular ride malfunctioned in norwalk. the ride's operator believes every believes a mechanical failure caused it to lose power and suddenly stop in midair injuring 18 people, mostly children. >> everything stopped but, of course, when it stops, the swings went all different directions with the children on it and they were bouncing off the steel frames. >> reporter: police say none of the children fell to the ground but the swings slammed into each other injuring the riders. >> a lot of kids were screaming. it was -- people went out their minds. >> reporter: a doctor at the festival heard children screaming. >> i happen to be a trauma surgeon in town so assessed all the kids at the time. and no one seemed greatly injured. all the kids were moving their extremities. >> reporter: first responders treated the injure children laying them out on the grass. 13 people were transported to area hospitals but all are expected to be okay. jericka duncan, kpix 5. >> investigators inspected all the rides at that festival and every attraction was reopened except for the ride that malfunctioned. time now is 5:11. a new law is now in the crosshairs of the gun control debate. the state that allows blind people to sign up for gun permits. >> and consumer groups sounding the alarm over arsenic found in two common foods. >> and let's take a live look out at the morgan fire on top of mount diablo from a camera in dublin. you can see the flames are still going this morning. we'll have the very latest on the fire and also on the evacuees. we'll be right back. [ laughter ] >> starting out with some fog around the spans this morning otherwise clear skies and temperatures unusually mild overnight. so numbers in the early going in the upper 50s and mid-60s inland and plenty of star shine at this hour. this afternoon we have clouds lingering along the shore. it will be sunny, mild, a beautiful monday for the bay. we'll be 100 inland as this high is in place over the eastern pacific. we just look for the numbers to skyrocket inland. not record highs but we'll be up there. it will be hot away from the coast but near the shoreline as per september usual it will be mild. today patchy fog at the airport no delays expected. a high of 72. thunderstorms in houston, denver and new york. new york okay at 73 degrees and sunny. south bay warm, 90 in san jose. a little warmer than average for this time of the year. 95 at morgan hill. and 89 at los altos. in the east bay we'll still be in the mid-90s today for the most part down at pleasanton though 98 degrees. 100 at brentwood and livermore. up in the north bay we'll be looking at numbers only 70 degrees in bodega bay but 86 in san rafael. 96 in sonoma in wine country today. extended forecast is calling for numbers to still be warm today but finally we begin to nudge the marine air farther inland bringing temperatures down to just the upper 90s. so finally we'll begin to ease it off by wednesday, thursday and friday in the east bay back down to the upper 80s. as we look to next weekend the numbers are back to about where they should be for this time of the year upper 80s inland. 70s all week during the week for the bay. it's going to be a lovely, lovely week for september. >> thank you. in this morning's healthwatch, many consumer groups have raised concerns about arsenic in rice products. now government health officials are out with a new study and cbs reporter marlie hall has details on the findings. >> reporter: the food and drug administration says the levels of inorganic arsenic found in rice are too low to cause health damage. the agency has released the results of a study of 1300 samples of rice and rice products. the largest study to date. there are two forms of arsenic and both occur naturally in the environment. the organic type is essentially harmless but the inorganic type is toxic and high levels potentially cause cancer. rice is grown in water on the ground and can absorb higher levels of arsenic than other foods. the study showed levels vary significantly in the product with the most inorganic arsenic found in brown rice and lowest in instant rice. consumer groups have urged the government to create standards for the amount of arsenic in rice products. >> all the fda is saying is it won't cause health problems in the short term. the issue about arsenic whether it's in juice or rice products is always the long-term effects of low level exposure. >> reporter: while the fda conducts more studies, the agency says people should eat a well balanced diet to minimize the potential negative health effects that could come from eating too much of any one food. grains like wheat, barley and oats are a good way to vary your diet. marlie hall, cbs news, new york. >> they are trying to lower levels of arsenic in rice. bay area fire crews responding to another big fire over the weekend. where a propane tank exploded right in the middle of that firefight. >> and i'm dennis o'donnell. could the raiders pull off the biggest upset in week one? things got chippie in the 49ers final home opener at the stick. we'll have sports coming up. ,,,,,,,,,, [ phone ringing ] [ daughter ] hi mom. hey honey, the trip's great, very relaxing. are you sure you can't make it? but you come every year! you could be playing bingo right now! woooo! and there's movie night -- you love movies! minutes. >> good morning. it's monday, september 9. i'm michelle griego. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. time now 5:30. 800 acres have burned up the very dry steep slopes of mount diablo sending smoke into bay area skies. this fire is still raging this morning. we have team coverage for you on this monday morning. brian hackney keeping an eye on the weather conditions in the area, but we kick it off this morning with cate caugiran with the very latest now on the fire. >> as we were driving to clayton we could see the fire burning over around mount diablo. i can it to you over my shoulder right now. you can see a faint glow but a little bit of smoke over that mountain right there. we know that again, that this fire is still very active in this area. meanwhile, the morgan fire has caused another round of evacuations. the sheriff's office says about 24 homes in the trail ride russelman park east trail upper and lower trail roads are among the latest round of evacuations. the first round started almost immediately after the fire was reported off of morgan territory road around 1:30 yesterday. cal fire says yesterday's temperatures in the 90s and just a little bit of wind caused this fire to spread quickly. temperatures were very high. the fuel and topography were very extreme so those were the two primary factors that influenced the spread of this fire. >> reporter: the last update we got 800 acres were still burning and the fire was just about 10% contained. cal fire says about 50 to 70 buildings are threatened by the growing flames. now, we know an evacuation center is set up at the clayton community library for anyone who needs a place to stay because as of now it's still not certain when these people will be able to return to their homes. the latest information we got is we should be getting an update from cal fire on the status of this fire in just about five minutes and we'll bring that update to you in the next half hour. live in clayton, cate caugiran, kpix 5. >> still very active up there in a big way. >> it's not going to hurt that much. the temperatures are still hot but the good news is we are not getting those east winds and that could be deadly but at least the winds are out of the northwest. it's not the driest direction. so that's good news. the temperatures today are hot. but they are not that hot. the latest on all of this northwest winds at 10 miles an hour, glad they are not out of the east. the forecast is for winds to be up to 15 miles an hour and highs not at the top of mount diablo but where they are fighting the fire highs 90 to 98 degrees and humidity 20 to 30% but not that low. it could be worse. the winds won't top out at 30 or 40 miles per hour so the two things, it's not that dry and it's not that windy. so that's good news. >> thank you. some people in homes not threatened by the fire have offered rooms to those who had to flee. evacuees we talked to were not too worried about their homes. >> we didn't see any flames. we saw a lot of smoke. we're thinking you know -- we were told about a quarter mile away. that seems a little close if the wind changed it could be dangerous. but, you know, we didn't feel we were in a lot of danger actually. >> while evacuees were sent to the clayton community library, some of their animals went to the contra costa county fairgrounds in antioch. facilities are available there for livestock including cattle, goats, hogs, horses and sheep. some roads are closed because of evacuations. let's get the latest from liza battalones. >> reporter: these roads affecting so many communities now especially in the clayton area but also marsh creek and morgan territory the back roads in the area, other areas will be affected. marsh creek closed between camino diablo. morgan territory closed to highland road in alameda county. not too far from there, highway 4 traffic of the typical slowing you would see for this hour of the morning with westbound traffic heavy from "a" street in antioch just as you approach pittsburg. no delays down the willow pass. bay bridge commute backups at the toll plaza. a brief delay with the metering lights off. another fire burned in sonoma county over the weekend sending flames and plumes of smoke up into the air. it started yesterday afternoon as the fire was in a ditch and burned a pallet factory between broadway and 8th street east near sonoma. sparks were seen coming from a tow truck. it's not clear what started the fire. more than 40 acres have burned. we have cell phone video. check this out. it was shot by a firefighter. it shows a plea pain tank that exploded as he was battling the fire. nobody was hurt. it showed a propane tank that exploded as the firefighter was battling the fire. >> it was an intense difficult firefight. we had over 30 trailers, commercial trailers, involved. >> highway 121 at 116 shut down as crews worked to kept that fire under control. 6 structures were burned. firefighters managed to save 10 other structures in that area. president obama takes his syria strike plans to the people. tomorrow, he will address the nation. the syrian president bashar assad is also talking exclusively to "cbs this morning" with charlie rose. this is his reaction to secretary of state john kerry's report on who is responsible for the chemical attack. >> secretary kerry has presented what he concludes is conclusive evidence. >> he presented his confidence and convictions. it's not about confidence. it's about evidence. the russians have completely opposite evidence that the missiles were thrown from area where the rebels controlled. that reminds me about what kerry said about the big lie that colin powell said in front of the world on satellite about the wmd in iraq saying this is our evidence. actually he gets false evidence. in this case, kerry didn't even present any evidence. >> president assad also says syria will retaliate if the u.s. victim found dead in a parked car on humboldt street at 10 a.m. yesterday morning. the city and university police consider the death a homicide although they are not releasing any information on a cause just yet. the killing is the 37th homicide in san jose this year. only the fourth ever investigated by school authorities. berkeley police are investigating their city's fourth murder of the year. officers responded to several shots that had been fired near the intersection of 8th and page street last night around 8:00. a man was found suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and died at the hospital. the victim's name hasn't been released. so far no suspects have been identified. news around the bay area. a man fell to his death outside candlestick park just after the 49ers game started yesterday afternoon. the man was walking with his brother when he fell from the elevated jamestown pedestrian walkway. witnesses told san francisco police the man appeared to be intoxicated. the man was in his 30s. today oakland's mayor and police chief will answer media questions regarding this helicopter. the police chopper was grounded in between because of budget cuts but earlier this year a nonprofit group called fueling california donated $10,000 to help buy gas to put it in the air. the nonprofit represents consumers when it comes to fuel costs. a sierra getaway once used by the hotel/casino straddles the california nevada border. it will close for a multi- million dollar project that's expected to last more than a year. sinatra lost his gambling license back in 1963 when a chicago mobster was spotted on the premises. owners hope to reopen cal-neva on december 12, 2014, which by the way would have been frank sinatra's 99th birthday. stock futures are high they are reserve will release consumer credit data for july this afternoon. tomorrow investors will get a look at the labor department's job openings and labor turnover survey for july. a disappointing jobs report for august and the ongoing tensions between the u.s. and syria caused stocks to end last week unchanged. the dow was down 15 last session and the nasdaq composite rose just 1 point. business forecasters say 2014 will bring better fiscal health. top economists surveyed by the national association of business economics predict the economy will grow 3% by the 2nd quarter of next year. in a report released today, they also say there will be low inflation and employment will improve. nissan is working on a smartwatch that will monitor both its car and the drivers. the watch will provide realtime data like a driver's heart rate and the car's speed. it's designed specifically for drivers of nissan's line of sport cars. the smartwatch will be on display at a motor show in germany this week. no word on when the new iwatch will be available to the public. starting today microsoft is making its xbox music streaming service available for free on the web. even if you don't use windows 8. the company hopes the move will attract new customers to its devices and services as well as help it compete with other digital music offerings like itunes and spotify. >> we know that xbox music for a monday, right? >> reporter: it is shaping up to be a busy monday. we are getting information now, frank and michelle, on a structure fire that's burning in the fremont area and it is visible from the freeway so heads up if you normally make the 880 commute you will see this approaching mowry avenue. smoke visible from the freeway now. the structure fire burning along farwell drive and apparently power lines are down in the area. this is causing a small power outage. this affects fremont about 2,000 pg&e customers affected. we do know that at least farwell drive is shut down outside the structure fire. as we get for information we'll let you know. if you approach an intersection that's blacked out remember to treat that as a four-way stop. bay bridge toll plaza is backed up ever since the new bay bridge opened we have been seeing earlier delays longer delays getting into san francisco. right now the toll plaza is backed up beyond the 880 overcrossing. san mateo bridge no problems out of hayward to foster city. over at the golden gate bridge, southbound traffic fine leaving southern marin. we haven't had any major problems to report to you approaching the toll plaza. it's a little foggy out there though. 880/237 interchange in the silicon valley, no problems to report to you. fremont and milpitas at the speed limit. and mass transit in good shape no delays for bart, ace, muni and caltrain. we are starting out with fairly mild readings around the bay area on this monday morning. some fog along the shoreline. you will see that when you come across the span at the golden gate bridge. otherwise, inland clear and mild and 64 degrees right now. temperatures elsewhere just in the 50s. by this afternoon, though, we are still going to be near 100 degrees inland around livermore sunny and hot, mild around the bay it's going to be a beautiful monday and right along the shoreline some sun but not exactly hot. temperatures will be mostly in the mid- to upper 60s. high pressure is in place in the eastern pacific. and as long as it sits out there, we continue to get warm temperatures b12 degrees warmer than -- about 12 degrees warmer than average inland. if you need relief head to the beach. down if the south bay warm 90 in santa clara, 90 san jose, 95 in morgan hill. redwood city today 88 degrees. over in the east bay the numbers will be in the mid-90s for the most part. but to livermore 100 degrees. 89 vallejo, 95 danville, stinson beach 67. 90 petaluma. 92 in santa rosa. the extended forecast we stay at 100 degrees today in the warmest spots inland but as the week goes on we begin to bring the temperatures down into the upper 80s wednesday, thursday and friday. that's back about where we should inland for this time of the year the bay in it's happening at atascadero lake near san luis obispo. the warm temperatures are causing algae in the lake to flourish reducing oxygen killing fish. low rainfall levels and the high number of dying fish are creating a foul smell in the area. the city installed fountains to increase oxygen levels but it hasn't helped. 5:47 now. the new eastern span of the bay bridge is still making news. the bridge has been packed all weekend, sometimes even late into the night. a lot of people used it to get to the sporting events going on with the 9ers playing of course and america's cup. but others just wanted to check it out for the first time. >> came in today to pick my son up from lacrosse practice because i wanted to come over the bridge. >> today is a big day for us to see the bay bridge to be honest with you. it's very awesome. >> well at times, traffic has jammed up on every approach to the span on both sides of the bay for thousands of commuters leaving san francisco, it has taken as long as an hour just to get on the bridge from just a couple of blocks away. oracle team u soviet union a scored a win this weekend in the america's cup competition but they have a long way to go. oracle won the sprint to the finish line in yesterday's second race. but emirates team new zealand still has the overall lead winning the first race of the day. new zealand needs 6 more wins to get the cup. team usa needs 10 more. new developments in the haggling over new stadiums for the raiders and the a's. the "oakland tribune" reports the raiders want a football- only stadium where the coliseum stands right now. but that could interfere with the a's ability to stay there and push them to san jose. the raiders have not commented on this. the a's are negotiating a new lease at the coliseum that would have an out clause depending on the raiders stadium plan. how about the 49ers? their win over the green bay packers was the team's final home opener at candlestick and there were some feelings of nostalgia. fans remembered the days when the stick was brand-new. used to go to kezar stadium and followed the move to the stick more than 40 years ago. they have been coming up tailgating ever since. it's a very sad time because it's been in this area for so long and now it's going to move away and all of these people who have supported team all these years are now being sort of shut out. >> got to go to santa clara now. many of the fans lamented the last season at candlestick saying they already have tickets for the new stadium in the south bay. as for the future of the stick, it's due to be imploded next year to make way for a new shopping center. in your healthwatch this morning, obese teens are more likely to develop eating disorders as they lose weight. that's according to mayo clinic's study that shows the teens had severe dieting patterns that turned into anorexia and bulemia. it's also difficult to identify the problem. research also found obese children on a weight loss regimen have medical issues. harvard researchers say most breast cancer deaths occur in women under 50. that's because younger women do not get regular mammograms. that study goes against a 2009 recommendation that only women over 50 should have mammograms. and electronic cigarettes versus nicotine patches. researchers put both to the test to see which one helps smokers
