The Lake County Forest Preserves District Board passed a resolution approving a memorandum of understanding with the Waukegan Port District to support its effort to get the Federal Aviation Administration's blessing and funding for a runway extension, which would require selling off some forest preserves land and has enraged environmentalists.

Ethylene oxide, a colorless gas known to cause cancer, is emitted by facilities that sterilize medical equipment and dried food products as well as by some chemical plants, posing a largely invisible and unrecognized threat to nearby communities.
"More than 100 coal ash waste sites, many unregulated, sit just feet from the Great Lakes, raising concerns for nearby communities and the 30 million people who rely on the lakes for drinking water."
