CLEMSON, S.C.
The Clemson Softball team (14-2, 8-2 ACC) won its 11th straight game, setting a program record, in an 8-0 victory over Furman (4-9, 0-0 SoCon) at McWhorter Stadium Friday evening. Clemson’s Marissa Guimbarda smacked a two-run homer – the 40th of her career – to left field to end the game in the bottom of the sixth.
Clemson ace Valerie Cagle, the ACC’s leader in wins, improved to 9-1 in the circle, in her third complete-game shutout of the season. The second-year freshman held Furman hitless for the first 3.0 innings of Friday’s contest. Cagle and the Tigers recorded 16 of Clemson’s 18 outs within the infield, including four strikeouts.
Clemson Advances Three to NCAA Finals Friday
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Laurie Barton, Trishauna Hemmings and Terryon Conwell each advanced out of their respective preliminary heats during Friday’s action at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. On Saturday, Barton will be competing in her second career NCAA indoor final, while Hemmings and Conwell will each compete in their first.
“We’re excited to have three athletes advance in three events,” said Clemson’s Director of Track & Field, Mark Elliott. “While we hoped to have had six athletes advance, these are the top 16 athletes in the nation for each event and we’re happy with the three we have moving on.”
Extra Time: Callum Johnson
In the 13th minute of Clemson’s match against Syracuse on March 7, Callum Johnson slipped in behind the Orange’s defense and scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal from the top of the 18-yard box. Luis Felipe Fernandez-Salvador created the opportunity by playing a perfectly weighted pass across the field and into Johnson’s stride after springing a counter-attack opportunity in Clemson’s own defensive third. After receiving the pass with a positive touch, Johnson fired his shot around the Orange’s keeper while simultaneously being tackled to the ground. Rather than watching the ball hit the back of the net, Johnson knew he had scored by the crowd’s immediate roar.
