An Ennis Independent Councillor says she’s disappointed at the government’s refusal to scrap the means test in place for those applying for the weekly carers allowance.
Councillor Ann Norton had received the backing of her fellow local representatives when she asked the Department of Social Protection to re-consider the evaluation process for the payment, and to make it universal like the pension or children’s allowance.
In response, the Department has told Councillors that based on Census data, this would cost an additional €1.2
billion per year.
