Hospitality venues 'insulted' at lack of consultation and involvement with Darwen Day

Empty deckchairs at Darwen Day Business owners claim they were not asked to be involved with a recent event celebrating their town, and feel insulted at the lack of communication between organisers and town centre traders. Darwen Day, which was held on Saturday, was the first major event to be staged in the town since the start of the pandemic, but several businesses within the hospitality sector say they were overlooked, with the event s organisation being handed over to a company that has no permanent presence in Darwen. The revival of the once popular Darwen Day, which was abandoned several years ago, was this year organised by Let’s Make, Crafty Vintage, Darwen Town Council and Blackburn with Darwen Council, however, Suzanne Halliwell, who runs Dolly s Tearoom, and Gary Perkins, who runs six businesses in Darwen town centre, said they were not asked to be involved in the event, and only found out about the festival at the end of June.

Blackburn with Darwen: council review into cinema meeting on track

Inside the new Reel Cinemas Blackburn A REVIEW into the row over the fiasco of a special meeting to scrutinise the handling of aspects of the contract for a new town centre cinema is being prepared, councillors have heard. Blackburn with Darwen Council Standards Committee was told that the report on what went wrong with the September Call-In would be ready for discussion in March. The original scrutiny meeting in the extension of the lease for the Reel Cinema building in Blackburn town centre from 20 to 25 years became a shambles because of an argument over dates between the council s ruling Labour group and the Conservative opposition who had requested it.

£280k Darwen Tower upgrade set to get the go-ahead

COUNCILLORS are set to give the green light to a major upgrade for an iconic East Lancashire landmark. Repairs and improvements to Darwen Tower have been recommended for approval by Blackburn with Darwen Planning Committee on Thursday. The £280,000 scheme will see the addition of stainless-steel engraved plaques to the Grade II listed building s observation deck and new steel supports for its upper landing. The project includes the replacement of rainwater pipes, signage, broken and missing glazing, and ground and first floor doors. It also proposes the repointing and consolidation of walls and repairs to asphalt weathering, handrails, landings and steps.
