Council responses to the November 2019 blaze have been detailed in a scrutiny committee report. More than 200 people were inside when the fire started and two students had to be rescued by firefighters, one from the sixth floor. Later a fire service report said ‘many lives were saved’ by the quick evacuation of the building. Helen Lowey, the borough s public health director, who led the authority’s response, said the council activated its civil contingencies plan on the night. Major priorities included finding alternative accommodation for students and other displaced residents, and providing emergency transport and highways and engineering support and welfare advice.
TWO stores known for their value for money will be opening on Manchester Road this Thursday. Supermarket chain Lidl is opening the doors to their fifth Bolton branch on February 25, while discount retailer Poundstretcher will be joining them. Lidl has launched two other supermarkets in Greater Manchester as part of the company’s £1.3bn investment plans across the country, a second store is opening in Manchester while a third will be launched in Glossop. These stores will create around 120 new jobs. Lidl provided an additional retail unit to Poundstretcher at the site on Manchester Road. The supermarket will feature an in-store bakery, parking for both cars and bicycles and electric vehicle charging spaces.
