End of an era as shutters come down on a great Kilkenny post office

The shutters came down on yet another locally-run business on Friday when the local post office at Prologue, Callan closed its doors for the last time.
Postmistress Elaine Bryan is taking her first steps in to a gradual wind down to retirement in August. Elaine’s husband, Bosco Bryan, recently retired after giving over 30 years in the prison service. Elaine and her mother Nellie have given nearly 63 years serving Callan as postmistress, 29 of those years Elaine has served.

It wasn’t until the 16th century that an organised postal system emerged in Ireland, with regular posts set up from Dublin to a few major towns.
This eventually led to the establishment of Post Roads which criss-crossed the country. Mail coaches began to operate in 1789 with the first one running between Dublin and Cork, speeding up mail delivery. This coach road ran through Callan. The earliest detail of the Post Office in Callan appears in Pigot’s Directory of 1824.
‘Inexcusable’ driving in Callan car park ‘put people’s lives in danger’ - Kilkenny Court

A judge has described as ‘inexcusable’ the driving of a young man who has been convicted of dangerous driving.
The events in a supermarket car park were witnessed by an off-duty garda and CCTV was shown in court.
Daniel Harty, 29 College Avenue, Callan Road, Kilkenny, contested the charge before Kilkenny District Court.
Garda John Moloney gave evidence that he had come out of the SuperValu in Callan, at approximately 9pm on April 3, 2020, and was walking into the car park behind the store, when his attention was drawn to two vehicles.
