Penalties and requiring gas station owners to better protect customers. News channel 8s john rogers explains the new changes. Good afternoon, the new law kicks in saturday october 1st. Its going to make it a much more serious crime to install a skimmer. Skimmers are increasingly being found inside gas pumps throughout tampa bay, and theyre becoming more sophisticated. Lawmakers want to discourage it. Starting saturday, a new law will increase the offense of the crime so criminals before, it wasnt taken seriously, it was unknown as a crime. There was a low penalty. The law also increases penalties against crooks who have fraudulent credit cards. And gas station owners will be required to take certain security measures to prevent skimmers from being installed.
