The Indian government announced on Monday that the country s coal production has gained substantial momentum over the past 15 days. This upturn comes in response to the exceptional rainfall experienced in coal-producing states in early October, which had temporarily disrupted production. During the last 15 days, the total coal production from all sources has surpassed an impressive 26.40 lakh tonnes per day.
The Indian power ministry has requested utilities to import 6% of their coal requirements until March, as rising power demand and insufficient domestic coal supply have raised concerns about dwindling coal stocks at power plants.
"Compared to the high base of same period last fiscal, the volume increase was 9.7 MT, or 3.4 per cent. This could have been higher if the logistics were eased out and intake not regulated by few consumers," CIL said in a statement.
