terrifying moments onboard a delta airlines plane on friday when a man on a flight from l.a. to nashville tried to breach the cockpit. another passenger quickly took the man down, but the plane was forced to make an emergency landing in new mexico. cnn s natasha chen is following this story. how did all of this play out? reporter: the passenger i spoke to said those two to three minutes felt like years. it was very disturbing to the passengers onboard who were hearing this yelling and screaming and not knowing what was going on. she said that about an hour into the flight this man started yelling stop the plane, stop the plane and started banging on the cockpit doors. within 30 seconds another passenger got up, tapped another passenger and the two of them helped take him down with the help of the flight crew as well. here s what she told me about that experience. i m so frortunate that there
possession the whole tile, feel-good security measures. they weren t doing anything. a terrorist isn t going to tell the truth when they check in at an airport. the fact we re screening checked bags as we started to do after the attacks of 9/11 has made it incredibly safer from the standpoint of flying. we re using full body imaging scaners, something that upgraded security measures as well. what we used for decades was designed for metal. if someone had powder or liquid explosives strapped to their bodies, there was no way to pick it up. the full body imaging scaners that we re using at airports across the country can detect these explosives under the clothes of someone that s traveling. therefore, it is, again, much safer. we still have a lot to do but it s considerably safer to fly today than prior to the attacks of 9/11. eric: we had the cockpit doors as you know are totally reinforced. i think if anything happened after flight 93, passengers are

seriously. and almost as though george w. bush after 9/11 said we don t know who did this, it could have been a lot of people, and didn t really take the lead on action to reinforce cockpit doors or increase airport security. you just kind of can t believe that it s happening. i think that s why you see that sort of a reaction. peter baker, michael crowley mikes a point that many on the right have been making, max boot i think has a piece in the washington post making this point. watching donald trump react to what general hayden, another one of the intelligence community officials who s highly alarmed at what he s seeing, certainly no one has ever suspected him of being a liberal, they are making this parallel that russian meddling was a political 9/11 and you covered george w. bush, i worked for george w. bush, his post-9/11 body of policies are highly controversial, divided this country in some terrible ways but the patriot act passed the u.s. senate 98-2, in the same way that t
like this. i listened to paul cruikshank, cnn s terrorism expert and he s rights. we in law enforcement have to make sure not to jump to conclusions. however, in incidents like this, as this one seemingly has played out, the model resembles one of recent vintage. in the united states in the washington world we look at things on a day-to-day basis, week-to-week, month-to-month. the radical jihadists look at things as a generational fight. this is a generational battle for them. we have to understand that they re very, very smart and they see where we re starting to put up our barriers. it s hard to take over an aircraft now. the cockpit doors are now enforced. there are air mar shalshals lch every flight. so what do they do?
