so we re confident that the infrastructure s in good condition. talking about the fact that the city s not normally accustomed to being hit with hurricane winds and conditions, but the chesapeake bay and the harbor that you have there in the port, it s a major water source, that is. so, what have you been instructing people to expect surgewise? well, we have a template for this when hurricane isabel hit in 2003. it created surge. some areas on the southern side of the south baltimore so we know that there are areas vulnerable. baltimore city has taken steps to move cars from roads where they re prone to flooding and opened parking facilities over the weekend to move out of the area and have some other safe places to park not prone to floodwaters and urging people in basement apartments or low lying areas to be careful, monitor
and in this box, favorable location right now to deal with weak tornadoes as we go throughout the evening so it s nighttime. you can t see them. they move quickly with the storms. keep your family safe in your rooms. let me show you the latest forecast track. just out from the hurricane center. they expect a landfall some time after 8:00 a.m., probably 10:00 a.m. or so in extreme eastern north carolina on the outer banks. most likely as a category 1. weakening it down a little bit from a 2 to a 1. what s interesting is going throughout the forecast, they don t weaken it all that much. hitting northeastern north carolina at a 90, they have it at 85 exiting and then the norfolk area, and then going throughout saturday night, the overnight into sunday morning, they have it as 80-mile-per-hour hurricane off the jersey shore and what s interesting is what they get tonight and the damage occurs in eastern north carolina you can extrapolate that up the coast and waking up tomorrow
the wrs of it is the sounds of eastern north carolina. that s where we re still expecting throughout the night tonight, probably six, maybe ten-foot storm surge causing significant damage and the waterfront communities in north carolina. up the coast, the coe noek rapids area, southern virginia, this area s very prone to storm surge flooding. they ll get theirs probably high tide cycle tomorrow into the early afternoon and getting the landfall, it still locks like long island to the east of there because of the storms coming north like this and then literally a t intersecting the coast and the water can t push sideways but pile up. so you re probably going to see the equivalent of category 2 surge of long island and rhode island we re concerned with. new york city still looks on backside of the storm, thomas. not worst-case scenario for storm surge. not the six to ten feet but a possibility of three to five in lower manhattan. all right.

5:00 p.m. today and closed all the way through basically monday morning at the earliest. so, the officials are doing the right thing here. looks like a couple more high tides to go through when things get interesting, starting to see the rain from the system, too, through the day on saturday. saturday will be the day that coastal new jersey goes through the transition and the winds pick up. see the outer bands there and then hitting a high tide into saturday night, we might be talking about water here where i m standing on the boardwalk and then high divide sunday morning between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. depending on where you are. that could be the doozy because that s when the eye of irene or the central circulation is close to us and probably the worst high tide sunday morning, when we re dealing with the worst winds and as the system moves away, i would say overnight sunday into monday, that s when things calm down here. but the surge is going to be immense. i m going to be standing on a
