In their final convention of June, the Cohasset Select Board formally recognized two events which had recently been celebrated in town.
The Select Board proclaimed retroactively for this year and henceforth that Cohasset would recognize the holiday of Juneteenth, and the entire month of June at Pride Month locally.
Juneteenth was formally recognized as a federal holiday earlier this month when President Joe Biden signed a bill establishing it as such.
Massachusetts followed suit, and Select Board Chair Keri Thompson said she was thrilled for Cohasset to do the same.
“I lived in Texas for grad school, and I remember first hearing about Juneteenth there because it’s widely celebrated in Texas,” Thompson said. “I had never heard of it growing up in Massachusetts, but I really got to know how wonderful this holiday is living in Texas, and I think it’s great that our country is choosing to recognize it.”
