NYC Starts College Savings Accounts For Kindergarteners

Harmony Project KC started at Kansas City’s Northeast Community Center seven years ago, with 33 low-income students getting free instruments and music lessons every week. Now more than 260 kids are in the program — and a few are gearing up to graduate.

This year, 97% of the city’s estimated 67,320 kindergarten students were automatically enrolled into the program, with 3% choosing not to participate.

The college savings program, introduced last year by former Mayor de Bill Blasio, aims to defray the costs of higher education and encourage long-term investing by giving each of the city’s public kindergarten students a seed investment that they can access when they enroll in college.

Eric Adams, fresh off his show-stopping Met Gala appearance, made the announcement Wednesday.
