Columbus police were called around 2:15 a.m. Thursday to the intersection of Morse Road and Cleveland Avenue on a report of a person who was struck by a vehicle. Police said in a press release that Javier Melendez, 39, of Worthington, was headed west on Morse Road in a 2007 Kia Sedona when his vehicle hit a pedestrian.  Research Volvo The male pedestrian, 36-year-old Hassan S. Muhiddin, was not in a marked crosswalk and was attempting to cross Morse Road west of the intersection with Cleveland Avenue, according to police.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol says that Italia Jefferson, a 20-year-old from Michigan, was driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer that went off the right side of the freeway and hit two trees. A passenger in the SUV, 21-year-old Xitalic Rivera, of Chino, Calif., died at the scene. Jefferson was taken to OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital in critical condition, the patrol said.
