But this story starts about a thousand miles west of washington, d. C. In abilene, kansas. And while eisenhower was born in dennison, texas, his family moved back to abilene, kansas when he was just a toddler. He stayed there through high school. I want to direct your view over here to this speech that is inscribed on this wall in the northwest corner of the memorial. When world war ii ended eisenhower came home to abilene and was given a heroes welcome and in a very humble way he started talking about not that he was a hero but what he dreamed of doing when he was a young boy in abilene, kansas.
