In Bijapur, 8 Naxalites were killed by security forces in a forest encounter. Led by Inspector General of Police, personnel recovered bodies and weapons. The area sees heightened Naxalite activity during the TCOC in summer.

Security forces have already gunned down 42 Maoists this year in Chhattisgarh, while 24 were killed in the entire last year.

With the latest incident, 41 Naxalites have been killed so far this year in separate encounters with security forces in Bastar region, comprising seven districts including Bijapur, according to police.

Bijapur district comes under the Bastar Lok Sabha constituency, which will go to polls in the first phase of general elections on April 19.

The encounter broke around 6 am on Tuesday at Lendra village in Bijapur after a joint search operation by the District Reserve Group (DRG), Special Task Force (STF), CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) that commenced on Monday night from Gangalur police station area, police said.
