The Gila National Forest is requesting all visitors to practice social distancing in accordance with New Mexico State health guidelines when visiting the various lookout towers located in area ranger districts. According to a release, the Gila National Forest has 10 lookout towers situated on high vantage points where the fire lookout can see smoke that may develop in addition to determining fire locations, report weather changes, and plot the location of lightning strikes during storms. It is requested that all forest visitors do not ask to use the employee’s restroom, enter the historical cabin which serves as the employees residence, and do not climb the tower to enter the cab and speak with the Forest Service Employee.
