UPTON - By just 80 votes, Upton residents elected to move forward with the new $12.4 million community center being proposed downtown following the Town Election on Tuesday.
Of 1,550 voters, 806 voted yes on a question exempting the town from Proposition 2 1/2 to pay for the Upton Community Center s construction at 0 Milford St. There were 726 no votes and 18 blanks.
Proposition 2 1/2 prevents local governments from raising propoerty taxes by over 2.5%, plus the rate of new growth, from one year to the next.
Now that the project has been approved at both the Town Meeting and Election, it must have its site plan approved by the Planning Board. If that happens, construction for the center could begin in July.
