The McKinley South End Academy, made up of four schools serving students with disabilities, was officially renamed the Melvin H. King South End Academy at a ceremony Wednesday.

Over the decades, Mel King brought his organizing approach to literally every setting — from community and tenant meetings, State House meetings with legislators, candidate forums during the 1983 election, small groups to large.

The first Black finalist for mayor of the city, he was credited, along with the eventual winner, Raymond Flynn, with running a respectful, calming campaign.

The Mel King Community Fellowship Program at MIT was founded by its namesake in 1970 and continues connecting changemakers across a range of social justice issues.

Blanche Staton has made an indelible mark on MIT graduate student living and learning over a quarter century at the Institute.

One of Boston's most influential changemakers died earlier this week at age 94.
