I think its very important that youre holding this hearing, and let me briefly explain why. In the aftermath of the attacks of september 11, 2001, the overwhelming focus of our government and of the American People was on the threat of terrorism. 12 years later this is no longer the case. Our loss of focus is in part a consequence of the success we have achieved, namely, that we have not had another catastrophic attack on our homeland since that terrible Tuesday Morning in september of 2001. But pride in this achievement must be tempered by an awareness of some harsh realities. First, al qaeda and its affiliates remain a ruthless, determined, and adaptive adversary. Second, the underlying ideology that inspires and drives al qaeda to attack us and our allies, namely, the ideology of violent islamist extremism is neither defeated nor exhausted. It manifest itself not just in a resurgent al qaeda, but in terrorist organizations that are either unfairly with al qaeda or loosely affiliated
Washington, this is meet the press with david gregory. Good sunday morning on a holiday weekend, a lot going on. This humanitarian crisis on children crossing the border is a staggering problem and so are the numbers. Check this out, more than 50,000 children have been caught since october 2013. That is more than double the year before just to give you some sense of how desperate the situation is. Our Miguel Almaguer joins me from murrieta, california, a town thats been a flash point in this story so far. Good morning. Reporter good morning. This is the Holding Facility in murrieta. It is a flash point, a symbol that galvanized two opposite sides. These are the faces of the desperate and scared, just some of the now thousands of unaccompanied minors packed into 100 temporary shelters dotted across the country. Go back home a group of them greeted with anger, some called hate as protesters turned away busloads of california families after they were illegally caught crossing the border.
Gentleman from california for your leadership on this issue, the leadership on the alzheimers task force and your bringing people together on both sides of the aisle, trying to leverage resources, be wise in how we do this, but recognizing a responsibility that you and i and or colleagues have, and that responsibility is to do everything we can to try to alleviate this burden and ultimately drive toward the cure. Mr. Garamendi thank you. Representative roskam, its been great working with you this evening, well call this a beginning, working on an issue that affects everyone on both sides of the aisle and across america. Rafsanjani that dr. Had been in agreement if i understand correctly about seclusion of those, i think we dont know exactly what happened. Whether there have been various explanations given. So the crisis caused by the announcement and the way that it was announced before there had been an agreement completely on the remaining two or three items between the two campaigns. To he issue of what announce, what to include in that announcement. And what to exclude. Led to a situation in which of course the outcome was rejected. And there was a potential crisis that reports that maybe a abdullah might announce parallel in quotation mark or a unity government with the risk that you could have a variety of governments so to speak which poses a great deal of risk for afghanistan. And the beneficiary of which would be only those who do not wish afghanistan well meaning the taliban and others. I give credit to the diplomacy of secretary kerry and esident obama that their intervention, very intense
