Notwithstanding the A-J Editorial Board’s reasonable assessment of the case to increase the term limits of the mayor and city council from two to four years and provide them with a wage commensurate to the gravity and demands of their work, we think there are several points that deserve to be added to the argument in favor of doing this.
In 2020, our organization undertook advocating for the city’s leadership to enact an Impact Fee policy that would make the city’s developmental strategy more fiscally responsible while at the same time deployed in such a way as to address the effects of development disparities set in place by racially motivated discrimination that haunts Lubbock’s past and persists into its present. Doing this work took hundreds of hours of internal meetings, strategizing, media engagement, copywriting, public comment, and attending the meetings of civic boards and the city council.
