Jim Nichols, Volvo’s product and technology communications manager, beheld the bare chassis of a 2021 Volvo XC40 Recharge, the company’s new all-electric car, in the lobby of Volvo’s new North American headquarters in Mahwah, N.J. He pointed out the car’s twin liquid-cooled electric motors (yielding all-wheel drive), and its low-slung battery pack. Together, they give the crossover 402 horsepower (and 486 pound-feet of torque), plus the ability to reach 60 miles per hour in 4.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to a modest 112 miles per hour.
“With this packaging, you lose no storage or passenger space,” Nichols said.

It’s unfair to say that Volvo took the easy route in developing the 2021 XC40 Recharge, the all-electric version of its popular subcompact SUV. Sure, it may be built atop the same Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) platform of its gasoline brethren – and, indeed, the same architecture resting underneath its Polestar 2 cousin – but the XC40 Recharge’s biggest triumph is how it seamlessly blends with urban traffic without eliciting curious “is that electric?” stares from passersby and other drivers.

Confirming a recent report by TheDetroitBureau.com, Volvo’s CEO said the automaker is developing a new battery-electric vehicle that will slot in under the recently launched XC40 Recharge.
The long-range BEV is part of a broader push into electrification by the Swedish automaker and its Chinese parent company, and the yet unnamed model will share the new electric platform jointly developed by Volvo and Geely Holdings, the Sustainable Experience Architecture, or SEA.

During an interview with Håkan Sandquist, director of powertrain strategy at China Euro Vehicle Technology (CEVT), it was revealed that the base engine used in the Volvo XC40 Recharge T5 is the same found in the Proton X50 as well as the Geely Binyue.
As a brief recap, the XC40 Recharge T5 is the plug-in hybrid variant of Volvo’s compact SUV, which was recently launched in Thailand back in early November. The model comes fully imported from Malaysia, so there’s a strong likelihood that we’ll be getting it as an alternative to the non-hybrid T5 AWD variant currently on sale.
