her return has inspired many and forced the sport to confront its stigma towards older athletes. chellsie memmel joins us now. thank you so much for taking the time out. thank you for having me. i am so excited for this. i was so happy to see you at nationals. i ve gone deep into your youtube page. it s so inspiring. what brought you back to the sport and how did it feel to compete at that level for the first time in a decade? it was insane, honestly, to compete again. the nerves were incredible. it was just so different this time around. but what brought me back was just wanting to get in shape. and i started doing that and i was just like i should just try flipping and i kept doing more and more gymnastics and tong enjoy myself, falling in love with the sport all over again. that led to being out on the competition floor.
that led to being out on the competition floor. it s so cool to watch that development on your youtube page. you know, you re like maybe i should try this. maybe i should try that. you know, i love this because i did gymnastics at a time back in the 90s when the conventional wisdom was you peak at 16, and you can be too big or too tall, and that is something that s currently changing and you are leading the way on that. speak to this idea that there is no limit. gymnastics right now, you need to be strong, you need to have that explosive strength, so age, that s not really relevant anymore like it was before. it shouldn t be, and that s i discovered this whole world and community of adult gymnastics, and they are just nothing but supportive of gymnastics as a whole of everybody who wants to try this sport, if you did it in your youth or if you didn t. it s amazing.
