Comrade Wije News Today

In June 1964, amid a massive crisis pregnant with revolutionary possibilities, the Pabloite LSSP entered into Madame Bandaranaike’s Sri Lanka Freedom Party government. This was the first time that a party claiming to be Trotskyist and historically associated with the Fourth International had entered into a bourgeois government.

Commemorating Wije Dias in war-torn northern Sri Lanka is significant because only the SEP has consistently fought for the unity of the working class and opposed both Sinhala chauvinism and Tamil separatism.

Workers and youth who attended the memorial meeting to honour Wije Dias spoke with the <em>World Socialist Web Site </em>about the key political role he played in the SEP and the International Committee of the Fourth International.

Here we are publishing messages sent by leaders of sections of the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI), for the memorial meeting paying tribute to Wije.

The Socialist Equality Party Summer School, held between July 30 and August 4, was animated by the understanding that the assimilation of the history of the Trotskyist movement is the basis for a theoretically guided practice.

The SEP held a well-attended and moving meeting last Saturday honouring the life of former general secretary Wije Dias and his decades-long political struggle for Trotskyism.

Thousands have paid their respects to Wije Dias, starting on Thursday at the Jayaratne Respect Home in Colombo, where his body was held, and on Saturday, the day of his funeral.
