Can LaMelo Ball still win Kia Rookie of the Year?
LaMelo Ball coming back as soon as he did heck, coming back at all was a boost for the Charlotte Hornets and to his already strong candidacy for the 2020-21 Kia Rookie of the Year Award.
The way in which he came back, though, surpassed surprising and veered into stunning.
Six weeks after it appeared his rookie season might be done, Ball returned to action for Charlotte against Detroit Saturday and put up 11 points, seven rebounds, eight assists, two blocks and one steal in 28 minutes. Little apparent rust, no noticeable stamina issues and a recharged Hornets transition game (23 fast-break points) in the victory.
Minneapolis/St. Paul – The NBA today named Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards as its Kia NBA Western Conference Rookie of the Month for April. Edwards earns his second Kia NBA Rookie of the Month award (March 2021) and is the third Timberwolves player to win the award multiple times, joining Karl-Anthony Towns (November, December 2015, January, February, March, April 2016) and Andrew Wiggins (November, December 2014, January, February, April 2015).
Edwards, who led the Timberwolves to an 8-8 record in April, ended the month scoring 345 points, grabbing 82 rebounds and handing out 53 assists. The last rookie to reach those levels in all three categories in one calendar month was Blake Griffin in January 2011 (364 points, 188 rebounds, 61 assists). The only other Timberwolves rookie to have a month like that was Christian Laettner in March 1993 (347 points, 193 rebounds, 70 assists). When you look at the roster for the No. 6 Catholic University women’s lacrosse program, you won’t see one of the unique details that makes their team special. Of the 35 student-athletes, over a third (13) of them are nursing majors.
Head coach Meghan O’Connor McDonogh, Ph.D. believes that having so many student-athletes with the same major helps the squad in more ways than one.
“The great thing about a young person that chooses to pursue a career in nursing is that they come with inherent care and desire to serve others,” says O’Connor McDonogh, Ph.D. “While not all of our athletes are nursing majors, that theme permeates throughout everyone in that they truly do care about one another. They love helping each other improve both on and off the field.”
