i m joined by congressman chris van hollen, from maryland. congressman van hollen, thanks for joining us on this friday night. how did you hear the news that john boehner was going to be stepping down? i was surprised as well. like luke i thought it was a matter of when but i didn t think it would be this soon. and i m sure the speaker s very relieved. he was clearly relieved at his press conference. but this is a very bad sign for the future of the house and the prospects of actually getting things done because what this means, alex, is that the 40 tea party folks, the most extreme folks in the republican caucus at the end of the day had their way. they re emboldened now. and whoever becomes the next speaker, they will hold a hammer over whoever that speaker is. and anytime the speaker gets out of line with that right-wing tea party agenda they can bring it down. so is there going to be a government shutdown, congressman? well, we re going to work very hard to avoid a government
like marco rubio. marco rubio, who helped pass it out the first time is now against it. so that s not something the speaker s going to be able to do. i d love it if he tried. but it would die in the senate now. there are other things he could do on budget issues and make sure that we funded the government at adequate levels to invest in places like the national institutes of health and head start and education. he could do that. but it didn t sound to me at the press conference today that that was what was on his mind. it was like he just wants to get out of here. zip-a-dee-doo-dah. congressman chris van hollen. it s going to leave quite a mess for the next couple months. squlin deed it sounds like it will. thanks for your time as always, congressman. thank you. up next i ll talk with democratic congresswoman maxine waters who joined congress the same year as john boehner, about what could still be in store. what? wow. yeah! okay. guys, i ll be writing a new language for ma
pressures within cuba for change. i don t expect the change from the top. but i believe a policy of engagement can help bring about change from the bottom. well, it s a remarkable historic day for the united states. i know it s been a long day for you specifically congressman van hollen. thanks for joining us. thanks, ari, thanks for having me. now we go right to havana where mark potter joins us. what is the reception there? hi, ari, a lot of people are just learning about it now. this is the hour of the national news broadcast here in havana. some people saw raul castro at noon. word has spread throughout the island. people are processing this. there s not a big groundswell. people taking to the streets, pounding pots and pans. but i think it s safe to say that people are very engaged by this. they think this is good news. for years and years we heard people here in cuba say they
cuban national who is in prison right now, been there for 25 years, was going to rot away the rest of his life in cuban prison for having provided the united states government with very important intelligence information, information important to our national security. he s coming hope. we don t know his name because it can t be disclosed. but the reality is that person would die in jail without this agreement, and i think it s really important to send a message to people around the world who are willing to risk their lives in order to provide the united states with important national security information that we re not going to forget them. so having that person come back sends an important signal to people who want to help the united states and help strengthen our national security around the world. congressman van hollen, thanks for joining us. best of the holidays to you, sir. thank you. happy holidays. boston marathon bombing suspect tsarnaev appeared in court this morning f
