UNIVERSITY PARK — Jennifer Fetter, Penn State Extension water resources program leader, has been named director of the Center for Agricultural Conservation Assistance Training.

Renee McDonald, a first-generation sheep producer in Lee County Georgia, spends many nights monitoring newborn ewes. In the last lambing season at Sheepy Acres Farm, eight out of ten of her pregnant ewes gave birth to twins. The lambing season holds many memories, but it also presents challenges, including twin births that require double the attention.

The challenge for many growers is finding the time and money to prioritize conservation practices while maintaining daily operations.

This week, the Senate is expected to consider a four-bill “minibus” appropriations package that would combine the Interior and Environment and Financial Services and General Government package that passed the House last week with the Senate’s version of the Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and Related Agencies, and Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies appropriations bills.

On June 13, 2013, the House Appropriations Committee approved its $19.5 billion Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies appropriations bill for fiscal year (FY) 2014.[1] The full House is expected to take up the bill soon. With nearly $17 trillion in federal debt and chronic deficits on the budget horizon, the House should pursue spending reductions that keep discretionary spending under the sequestration cap.

Senate allocates slightly less in overall spending that House version passed on July 20.
