A cluster of 18 NGOs, based both within Sudan and internationally, have called on the permanent representatives and all member states of the United Nations, to revaluate the candidacy of Sudan to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) in the forthcoming vote in New York on Tuesday. In an open letter to all UN member states, the group argues that “the human rights practices in Sudan are clearly incompatible with the well-defined criteria for membership of the HRC”.

The Sudan Bar Association (SBA) has further explained the vision of their proposed draft constitution with regards to military reform in a symposium in Khartoum on Saturday, after criticism. They propose limiting military powers much more than stipulated in the 2019 Constitutional Document.

Jibril Ibrahim, Minister of Finance and head of the Justice and Equality Movement, said that the military junta intends to maintain its control over sovereign and security authorities, defence authorities, foreign relations and international cooperation authorities, and all other authorities during negotiations over the executive government through the Security and Defence Council.

As demonstrations took to the streets across Sudan today to mark International Women’s Day*, the head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Sudan has acknowledged “the critical roles that Sudanese women and girls continue to play to shape a brighter future,” saying that “their courage and perseverance give us hope and added determination in pursuing our path to work even harder to empower them”.

The Chairman of Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council and General Commander of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), Gen Abdelfattah El Burhan, has pledged that the SAF will leave all political frameworks if a national consensus is reached through elections.
