An American soldier was detained on charges of criminal misconduct in the Russian Far East city of Vladivostok last week while on leave after finishing his tour of duty in South Korea, officials said Monday.

A US soldier who traveled to Russia independently has been arrested 'on charges of criminal misconduct'.

The soldier was arrested by Russian authorities last week in Vladivostok, an area northeast of the Korean peninsula near where the Russian Pacific fleet is headquartered, according to the Army.

The soldier was reportedly stationed in South Korea and traveled to Russia on his own.

When asked about the case, US National Security Council Communications Director John Kirby said: "We are aware of this case."
