A very short-term continuing resolution, like a week, maybe less. but i see no way that this all the way to february 16th thing happens. theres no way. youve got rand paul against it, lindsey graham against it. youre talking about 12 democrats would be needed to cross the aisle. its just not happening. so basically, were going to have this -- this happens a lot in the senate. were going to have this process that we all know how it ends and thats going to be with cloture failing and then its goin...

Im also learning tonight the president is in the residence of the white house, you can see that behind me here, he is watching this vote. they are watching this very carefully. they do believe they have the votes in the house of representatives. the president was on the phone earlier today with some of his freedom caucus supporters. they are going to be with him, we are told. the senate is a bigger unknown. we do not know if that vote will happen tonight. final vote or tomorrow. the white house ...

The top. the president is the leader. hes got to get everybody in the room and he has to lead. if theres a shutdown, i think it would be a tremendously negative mark on the president of the united states. hes the one who has to get people together. >> reporter: the president just fwe tweeted about this meeting with chuck schumer. he described that meeting as an excellent preliminary meeting with senator schumer. making progress, he said, a four-week extension would be best. we should just poi...

That we deal with this non emergency right now. >> even the simple matter of trying adjourn for the evening raised objection. here is independent senator angus king. >> is there an objection? the senator from maine. >> i object. i dont understand why were adjourning when were in the urgent situation. we can vote tonight on cloture and work on the matter tomorrow. this is irresponsible and i just dont understand it. i object to the motion. >> the senate took up the four-week continuing resolution...

>> all right. and the energetic, i think we can say, white house briefing wrapping up there with the legislative director for the white house and the budget director for president trump. i want to bring in my panel now to talk about this, chris cilizza and mave reston. what do you make of the theatrics we see playing out as the clock ticks toward a shutdown. we saw this at the white house, a lot of blame for democrats. we saw mitch mcconnell on the senate floor blaming democrats, the white house...

Support they need to get that passed through. so as of now, there is not a very clear path forward at all, a lot of people up here wondering what the next step is. there have been a lot of side things suggested, maybe the potential for potentially passing a short-term continuing resolution, just for a few days to get them into next week. but as of now, republican leadership is not too apt on that idea. this is a major deadline at midnight, the government shuts down and runs out of money. mcconne...

Leadership does indeed have the votes that they need to get this passed through tonight in the house at least the first step of a two-step process. i saw speaker of the house paul ryan walk from his office to the floor smiling. certainly a lot of drama at least on his side. out and really ironed out in the last hour after he ws able to secure the house freedom caucus on board this bill. they had certainly been withholding their votes for most of the day. we will be watching this vote along with ...

60 votes. you have 51. senator mccain is not going to be here. you need democrats. in washington to get a job done, youve got to compromise. >> i think theres going to be compromise on an immigration agreement. to be honest, weve been actually making good progress on that. but thats traking some time. we need a legislative solution. that has been something that congress has dealt with for almost 13 years without a solution. >> they dont necessarily want comprehensive immigration reform if you li...

Government down. >> there is an urgency. theres an urgency in their lives because of the uncertainty of tomorrow. whether tomorw wil mean deportation for themselves and their families, yes, there a re urgency. >> i find it rather disingenuous to say were against this short-term continuing resolution because we want another short-term continuing resolution. >> this resolution kicks the can down the road. there is no promise and no likelihood that another kicking of the can down the road will get ...
