The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed all pleas demanding voting using paper ballots, 100 per cent cross-verification of vote count in electronic voting machines (EVMs) with the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) and physical deposit of VVPAT slips.

Rejecting the pleas for paper ballot voting, complete EVM-VVPAT verification, and physical deposit of VVPAT slips, the court observed, “Blindly distrusting a system can lead to unwarranted suspicions.”

The voter had alleged in the audio that he pressed the button on the EVM, neither did the slip appear in the VVPAT machine, nor did it make a beep sound.

The National Physical Laboratory is working with the European Space Agency to develop portable optical atomic clocks for the next generation of Position, Navigation and Timing (PNT) satellites.

The Supreme Court directed the sealing and storage of symbol loading units (SLU) along with EVMs for at least 45 days post-election. Candidates who stand second or third can request verification of microcontrollers in EVMs. The court rejected demands to revert to paper ballots, calling suspicions of EVM manipulation unfounded. The verification process will be conducted by engineers from EVM manufacturers, with expenses borne by the requesting candidates and refunded if tampering is found.
