A lack of wind made for a slow start at Sunday's 'Cool Kites' event, but soon a plethora of giant kites were seen floating over Detroit Lake to kick off Sunday's Polar Fest schedule.

The "Cave People" that arrived at Detroit Lakes' City Park a couple of weeks ago are just the tip of the iceberg for nonprofit Project 412's plans in the lakes area this winter.

Ice sculpture artists Paul and Deneena Hughes brought their son Brett to Detroit Lakes on Thursday, Feb. 10, to complete an 8-foot-tall sculpture that will remain on display next to the MN Sn'Ice Palace throughout this year's Polar Fest celebration, which opens this weekend and concludes on Sunday, Feb. 27.
