So Much Polar Ice Is Melting That It's Slowing Down the Earth's Rotation

Spin Cycle Climate change is causing so much polar ice melt that it's slowing down Earth's rotation and — here's the kicker — it will alter how we measure time in the future. That's the crazy (and yet logical) conclusion that Duncan Agnew, geophysicist and professor at University of California, San Diego, reached in his […]

Faster spinning Earth may force negative leap second in 2029

For the first time in history, world timekeepers may have to consider subtracting a second from our clocks in a few years because the planet is rotating a tad faster. Wednesdays study in a scientific journal says that clocks may have to skip in a second — called a “negative leap second” — around 2029. Ice melting at both of Earth’s poles has been counteracting the planets burst of speed and is likely to have delayed the global second of reckoning by about three year...

Global climate change linked to delay in unveiling of negative leap second

A study led by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California suggests that instead of regularly adding a second to world clocks, timekeepers might have to start subtracting seconds starting around 2029. Scientists attribute the change in time to changes in Earth’s magnetic field, masked by the melting of sea ice in polar regions.

Study: Melting polar ice is changing the earth's rotation and affecting how we measure time

The impact of climate change has been felt across the globe in rising temperatures and rising sea levels โ€” but a new study suggests global warming has accelerated the Earthโ€™s rotation, affecting the way we measure time.
