environmental policy, in immigration policy. i mean, this is where the executive gets a lot of blow back from people who say accurately you can t win it legislatively, use what power you have that s unchecked to try to chip away at it. i think there s no question. that s what the president is trying to do here, as jeffrey says, when he has to chance to name his own director, he will name somebody that will walk in and say i don t want the core function of this agency to prevail. i think to take this one step further, the bigger problem here is what does the government agree about what government should do to intervene in the financial marketplace? there s not agreement about this. there s lots of reasons why there s not agreement, principle, influence of banks on capitol hill, political interference. even when dodd frank was passed, you have major banks saying this will not address the problem, and b, so onerous to make the work of banks more difficult,
even was talking about it. the president, albeit belatedly, is going there. does that show he is responsive to criticism ? well, there is no question. this is an area like we discussed yesterday when he was giving good marks. you know, any politician has to understand that your response to a natural disaster is your bread and butter as a politician. it is is your core function, government s core function is to protect its people. i remember back to hurricane katrina. there were a lot of factors in that. one of the reasons president bush was criticized so heavily, he was a governor in texas. he knew how to do this. he understand this was a core function. and things got in the way. but it led to criticism. here too the president allowed
people have to remember this is the poor function of government, to look after people, take care of people who have no other place to go, not even to their local government or the state government. they have to be able to rely on the federal government when something is this large. i think it s a huge opportunity for a president who claims to want to dig in on details around infrastructure, to understand core function as president is to lead a federal effort to respond to disasters. so what do you think trump s options are? hopefully it doesn t happen. if we see a repeat of the sandy situation, they try to tie it to a funding bill or tie it to a debt ceiling negotiation, or try to tie it to offsets of other government spending. all those things will delay the process just like it did with sandy. what are his opinion snuns. his main option is to use the bully pulpit effectively and try to lead and be the chief advocate for victims of this
critical of the congressional budget office back in march during the house process. so my question is, does the president believe that his discussions with lawmakers about what they want and their concern about the legislation, should it be guided by the cbo score and will it influence his thinking as he looks at the bill? i think one of the points that i made last time, alexis, which stands, is that the cbo core function is budgetary and fiscal impacts and not on people and they ve been wildly off by a huge percentage when they ve tried to score people. their track record on doing that is not good. and so, we re going to we maintain what we have all along. we want to do the right policy. and the cbo score should be used by members in the senate to decide, you know, to the extent that they think that helps them make a decision but i think we all understand, look, obamacare was we promised it was going to drive premiums down $2,500,
integrity commission headed by chris coback who none other single handedly has had an anti-voting rights agenda trying to make voting exclusive and inaccessible. courts found his actions to be unlawful. he is now heading up an effort that is widely seen as a way to legitimize mass voter suppression around the country in the months and years ahead. you know, similarly, the washington post last monday knit together a story of the cuts that are being made to federal civil rights offices across all of the federal government which are tasked, career lawyers tasked with ensuring that our federal dollars do not support discrimination. and there are pretty serious cutbacks being proposed to those offices. when you take a step back you look at an administration that is intent on undoing really important progress on civil rights and hurting the core function of the federal government which has been over
