with 9 in critical condition tonight with 99 in critical condition tonight. isis claiming responsibility. this could change the course of the u.s.-led war on the terror group and the course of the war in the middle east now. a broad regional civil war starting in syria. i want to bring in our global affairs correspondent. and elise, with the french president saying that this is now war, what are u.s. officials saying about what it means for the united states, keeping in mind that the president of the united states said yesterday that the day of the attacks and what is he saying? reporter: look, erin, isis is already a global terror organization. if not one of the, then the pre-eminent global terrorism organizations. i think that there s a recognition by u.s. officials and the coalition already. you saw that they have been able to inspire attacks around the world. they had affiliates popping up through the middle east, isis
the obama administration did not want to see other affiliates around the world, such as in the sinai peninsula, such as libya, they did not consider these groups part of core isis or daish, a group contained to iraq and syria. now we re seeing outgrowths, groups pledging allegiance to the leader of isis and this is something the administration and counter isis coalition is going to have to deal with. we ve seen isis focus on territorial advancesing taking over territory, not high-profile attacks. this were at hand of isis this plane going down, would that represent a shift? it absolutely would. again, it would be a very big, big deal because of the spread of isis around the world. it means that anybody who wants to call themselves daish can get up and say, i want to launch a homegrown attack is what we call it here in the united states or lone wolf attack what it s
from places that are themselves very socially conservative. so people they act based on learned behavior. if you have individuals that grow up in the middle east for their whole life they will replicate what they have learned there. that s the problem. when you re in it in the west where the society is very open and gender mixing and liberal education, liberal leanings social conservatism doesn t work. you see this not just in muslim community but in other communities that are equally conservative. they tend to be very intolerant. that is the problem with rigid social structures. the only way for this to change is for the new generation that is here to change that by example. so at the end of the day who worries you more? is it core isis or lone wolves inspired by isis?
underlying issues are how the kurds are properly supported, because that s going to be very, very critical, how do we all reach out to the sunnis to feel that there is a future for them and that they are not alone, and if we do not solve the puzzle of a future political future for the sunnis in iraq, then they re sitting there saying, what s the difference? i think the key is that unless we can unravel the future of a sunni future in iraq, then the iraqi puzzle will never be done. i hope that our friends, especially in the united states, understand that crucial part. from syria, again, it s how we reach out to the syrian tribes. i think that this is the beginning of the end of isis in syria and iraq. i m seeing that their heyday is behind them.
