A new years day fire started by a burning candle nearly led to tragedy when it was reported that one person was trapped and unable to get out.

The incident took place on Tuesday, December 27 on Castle Drive in Falmouth with two fire appliances from Falmouth attending the scene.

The 66-year-old male driver was driving on the B3284 when his vehicle collided with a tree at around 7am, trapping him inside.

Snow has fallen in Cornwall overnight but Falmouth, Penryn and Truro appear to have escaped unscathed.

People are being urged to avoid the area to allow emergency services to work.

Police, fire and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

Parents are being warned that schools and colleges may open later or even close altogether.

A fire investigation is now beginning with police
