Image courtesy of Google Maps Councillors have called for a crackdown on a ‘criminal element’ allegedly behind an increase in street begging and anti-social behaviour in Rochdale town centre. Hotspots are said to include The Walk, Baillie Street and various high street banks. The problem is understood to have become so serious a number of businesses are considering moving elsewhere. Some have linked it to the Broadfield Park Hotel, which was used as emergency accommodation for those at risk of homelessness during the pandemic. However, the Local Democracy Reporting Service understands the building has not been used for this purpose since December and is currently empty.

An artist s impression of the proposed Rochdale AMPI development Rochdale is eyeing an exciting future as a ‘centre of manufacturing excellence’ after it was awarded £23.6m from the government’s Towns Fund. It is one of 45 places across the country set to benefit from a £1bn tranche of funding for ‘left behind’ areas, announced in the budget. Although just shy of the £25m bid for, it means a number of ambitious plans drawn up by the Rochdale Towns Fund board  are set to go ahead. These include 700 new homes in central Rochdale as part of the regeneration of Lower Falinge, major improvement to the A58 at St Mary’s Gate and new medium-sized units at Kingsway Business Park.
