Study: Single family homes in the city would pay a fee between $12 and $36 per year.
Larger properties in Erie would pay much more, because the $24 billing unit would be multiplied by their square footage
Erie businessman Rick Griffith understands the financial calculus related to long-term infrastructure needs.
That’s why Griffith is not surprised that Erie Mayor Joe Schember’s administration is exploring a new revenue stream that several other municipalities have put in place: a yearly fee assessed on property owners which covers the multimillion-dollar costs related to ongoing stormwater system maintenance and improvements.
The fee which could bring the city $1.6 million a year, according to preliminary estimates would apply to residential and commercial properties regardless of taxable status, which means governments, nonprofits and other owners of properties that are currently tax exempt would pay as well.
The Erie Parking Authority wants to take over the collection of parking fines and the installation of immobilization boots that are placed on vehicles for delinquent parking tickets, duties that are now handled by city employees.
The suggestion was made in a letter sent to Mayor Joe Schember’s administration and Erie City Council members by Christopher Friday, the Parking Authority’s executive director.
City Council discussed the issue before its regular meeting on Wednesday.
The Parking Authority, according to Friday’s letter, also wants to explore extending the enforcement of downtown parking regulations during evening and nighttime hours. Metered on-street parking downtown is not presently enforced at night.
