Save the Heart of Reid Park members propose new zoo expansion option
REID PARK EXPANSION G MINOR By Mikala Novitsky | May 3, 2021 at 8:44 PM MST - Updated May 3 at 8:44 PM
TUCSON, Ariz. (KOLD News 13) - Just 24 hours before Mayor Regina Romero and the Tucson City Council discuss the options for the Reid Park Zoo expansion, members of Save the Heart of Reid Park are recommending a new option. Members say the plan could be a win-win for everyone, but officials arenât so sure.
âThis concept will be part of that discussion. I believe it will get a hearing. Of course, until they vote we donât know how it will go, but we are optimistic. Weâre just optimistic that this concept will be well received because it does solve a lot of problems.â Bob Vint, a member of Save the Heart of Reid Park has no doubt the new option will be heard during tomorrowâs council study session, despite coming into play so late.
Late last week, Gov. Doug Ducey reluctantly gave permission for Pima County to work with FEMA to set up vaccination centers in minority and low-income neighborhoods.
Why Ducey decided to pick this particular fight remains a mystery. In an effort to get more minority and poor people vaccinated, FEMA has been working with some local authorities to set up vaccination centers with a dedicated supply of doses. Pima County happens to be transitioning to indoor vaccination clinics (as efficient as the drive-thru mass vax sites are, you can t expect your staff to stand out in
triple-degree digits for nine hours as cars roll by) at the Kino Event Center and El Pueblo Neighborhood Center. So it seemed a perfect fit that would help roughly 210,000 more Pima County residents get vaccinated.
