Letters and feedback: May 12, 2021 Florida Today © MALCOLM DENEMARK/FLORIDA TODAY The Mims water treatment plant. The County Commission on Tuesday voted to allow Commissioner Rita Pritchett to begin remove the fluoride from the Mims water. Commission is off-base on fluoride I read with total disgust the excellent article by Eric Rogers and Alessandro Marazzi Sassoon in the May 8 edition of FLORIDA TODAY. The actions of County Commission Chair Rita Pritchett at the May 4 commission meeting are mind-boggling. From the article, it is obvious that the other commissioners were confused, as was the county staff. The item about halting the administration of fluoride at the county-run water treatment facility in North Brevard was not on the agenda. There was no opportunity for input by the public, and there was no expert scientific input. I mean, talk about "railroading" a commission vote. There is no scientific evidence that the amount of fluoride in drinking water raises the risk for high blood pressure or that it ages people quicker, as Pritchett claims. For decades, the majority of communities in the U.S. have added fluoride to drinking water when the amount of fluoride was too low or absent. As the article mentioned, several American medical associations, the WHO and the CDC have all endorsed the use of fluoride for the prevention of dental cavities.
