Gaston County confirms first rabies case of 2021
Three dogs in Gastonia are expected to be safe after a dead raccoon tested positive for rabies Wednesday, March 3.
Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement found a dead raccoon during an animal welfare check in the 2000 block of West Davidson Avenue on Monday. The dogs were within reach of the raccoon and were possibly exposed to rabies, according to a release.
All three dogs were had updated rabies vaccinations and received a booster shot on Monday. The raccoon was sent to the N.C. Laboratory of Public Health in Raleigh, where it tested positive for rabies.
