Travis County District Attorney-elect José Garza on Thursday announced he is appointing former DA candidate Erin Martinson to lead the special victims unit at the DA’s office next year.
Martinson lost to Garza in the Democratic primary after she campaigned on a platform of making sexual assault cases a priority work she will partly focus on in this future role. The unit is dedicated to addressing domestic violence, child abuse and sexual violence cases.
“The criminal justice system in Travis County has repeatedly failed survivors. That ends today, Martinson said. “Those who have survived violent crimes deserve to have a justice system they can trust. Under José Garza’s leadership, we are going to build a justice system where victims are believed and treated with dignity and respect starting from Day One.”
