A wave of antisemitic attacks has broken out in communities across the country over the last month or so. Officials in law enforcement and government are coming together to confront the attacks, many of which were apparently tied to the outbreak in violence between Israel and Hamas.
More than 1,200 people participated in a Tuesday town hall briefing on antisemitism organized by seven Florida Jewish federations, including the Tampa Jewish Community Centers & Federation and the Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee.

It is most unfortunate that the Florida House has passed the “anti-riot” bill proof that raising that old reliable battle cry, “law-and-order,” is more important to Florida’s leaders than seriously grappling with Floridians’ financial and employment troubles or still-present dangers from the virus that has so far cost more than 33,000 Florida lives.
It’s all the more unfortunate that the Republican-dominated House approved HB 1 (a title of honor that itself reveals perverse priorities) by a huge majority: 76-39 along party lines.
The bill is Gov. Ron DeSantis’ answer to the Black Lives Matter protests that swept the nation last summer 93% of which were entirely peaceful, according to a study last fall.

Last Friday, Florida’s Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed the controversial HB 1 Combating Violence, Disorder, and Looting and Law Enforcement Protection Act, a draconian piece of legislation that gives the state greater power to suppress “unlawful assemblies” and maintain funding for law enforcement.

Now that the House has passed HB 1, the Florida Senate will have to pass a similar bill before it reaches the desk of Governor DeSantis. The Senate is also dominated by Republicans, who currently hold 24 of its 40 seats, but it has yet to give the bill a hearing in committee.
