Man! What a night of amazing Alan Jackson covers. I enjoy these each week, and The Sequestered Songwriters have paid homage to many greats, but this week will likely go down as my favorite. Everyone contributed to AJ Night including Cody Jinks, Courtney Patton, Adam Hood, Jamie Lin Wilson, Cody Canada, Matt Hillyer, and so many more.

In October, Austin s brooding balladeer Bill Callahan teamed with equally enigmatic auteur Bonnie Prince Billy to release a surprise cover of Cat Stevens Blackness of the Night, with arrangements by Drag City labelmate Azita Youssefi. The singles have continued weekly since, each a new cover and collaboration, ranging from pop busters (Steely Dan s Deacon Blues with Bill MacKay; Billie Eilish s Wish You Were Gay with Sean O Hagan) to more obscure (Johnnie Frierson s Miracles filtered through Ty Segall; Lowell George s I ve Been the One with Meg Baird). Amid Lou Reed s Rooftop Garden and Hank Williams Jr. s OD d in Denver, the duo also rolls out a deep Jerry Jeff Walker fascination with takes on Little Bird, Letter Sung to Friends, I Love You, and Night Rider s Lament. The arrangements spiral eclectic and provocative, hung across the balancing act of Callahan s low, methodical intonations and Oldham s creaking high lonesome. –

By now we all know about that MusicFest tribute that was recorded back in January 2020, right? It s called
The Years, A MusicFest Tribute to Cody Canada and the Music of Cross Candian Ragweed, it s out on Friday (January 8th), and we are stoked.
Today, we got another taste of the project in the form of Wade Bowen and Jamie Lin Wilson singing Sick and Tired, easily a top-five-all-time favorite from Ragweed for me. Have you ever heard the story of how Cody and the boys coerced Lee Ann Womack to singing with them on the original? From Taste of Country:
I just thought that was
the coolest, Wilson recalls. Having someone that is a mainstream country star comin in and singing on this Red Dirt record, I just thought that was so cool. We felt the same way, CCR s vocalist and lead guitarist Cody Canada admits in a video chat. The band met Womack at RodeoHouston, through their shared manager, and she agreed later that night to sing on their next album. She drove herself over [to the recording session], which was really unheard of at the time, Canada recounts. I asked her how I could pay her she said a six-pack of Budweiser and some Whataburger . I was like, Man, this is gonna be a lifetime friendship .
