There has been a rise in the prescription of anxiety medications and other sedative hypnotic needs. In 2014 and 15 in rhode island, 33 of those receiving opioid prescriptions were coprescribed benzodiazapines. This is a tremendous, tremendous deadly combination and has been a significant variable in the increase in opioid Overdose Deaths in rhode island and the statistics show nationally. So along with fentanyl, we need to look at the coprescription of benzodiazapine. Other strategies for the prevention of initiation include but are not limited to patient education and the use and storage of medication, family education, continued Public Health education venues and peer recovery resources. Treatment within a recovery oriented system of care individualized for the patient that is easily accessible can prevent the progression of the disease and the possibility of overdose.
