any number of reasons, including the sight of friends and neighbors going to the icu, vaccination rates have started ticking up. that is the good news. new vaccinations, now, averaging 3 389,000, a day. that s more than 35% higher than just a week ago. and it s thehr weeks. joining us, now, is dr. vivek murthy, a surgeon general of the united states. dr. murthy, thanks so much for joining us. so, that s certainly good news about the the uptick. um, do you have a sense of exactly why it s going up? i mean, are people just kind of heeding the the advice more? well, anderson, i think what s happening is people are seeing how dangerous the delta variant is. they are seeing family members and friends get sick. they are realizing that the vast majority of people who are in the hospital, and who are dying from covid are unvaccinated. and i hope they re recognizing that they can get protection, if they get vaccinated. i think there are other reasons,
provincetown, massachusetts, is now driving new guidance from the cdc. 74% of the overall cases are among fully vaccinated individuals. and i think that came as a surprise to many folks that we were told that if you re vaccinated you re most invincible. i think many people wrongly assumed that. reporter: local officials say there have been at least 882 cases linked to this cluster overall. the research showing infected people who had been vaccinated held a similar amount of the virus also known as viral load as those who are unvaccinated. shedding light on the agency s decision to issue new mask guidance, recommending most fully vaccinated americans wear masks indoors. unmasking indoors for fully vaccinated people is no longer a safe choice, especially if you have people at home like kids or elderly parents who are higher risk, who are unvaccinated themselves. reporter: the study comes
elderly who are on the border. i really think all it would have taken to convince them was for the fda, the full fda approval instead of the emergent. a lot of people were upset about that. sunny, i wonder you re sending out messages to people in your community. you re in arkansas where the numbers are not good. only about a third of arkansans are vaccinated. how are people reacting to your social media posts as they try to reach the unvaccinated? they are very unhappy about it. that particular post that you played, the comment section is awful. there s a lot of accusations being thrown around that any any nurse or health care worker that posts about it is just a crisis actor. we are awful people, we re making it up, we re getting paid for it. nothing is real, or that it s just the flu, and a lot of other horrible misconceptions.
and the doctors have to say, sorry. it s too late. right now too many people are dying you feel or watching someone they love dying and saying if i just got vaccinated, if i just. it s heartbreaking. and it s complicated even more because it s preventable. america s divided between the majority of eligible people who are vaccinated and those who are not, and i understand that many of you in the majority are frustrated with the consequences of the failure of the minority to get vaccinated, but i want you to know i m going to continue to do everything i can to encourage the unvaccinated to get vaccinated. that includes addressing hesitancy and misinformation
