Back in 2018, Vancouver’s previous council unanimously approved a “provisional vision statement and guiding planning principles” for False Creek South, and directed that “detailed planning work in False Creek South generally be deferred until greater clarity is reached on lease negotiations with leaseholders on city lands.”
Three years later, there has still been no resolution of the negotiations on those leases, the earliest of which are set to expire in less than a year, ratcheting up tension and uncertainty for many residents.
Meanwhile, there’s been a fresh round of debate around the future of this valuable city asset. Recent op-eds in this newspaper, and other outlets including the Georgia Straight and The Tyee, have presented opposing views on the appropriate amount and type of development for False Creek’s publicly owned land.
