A suspect linked to a gang believed to have shot dead a police officer last week has been killed in a police shootout in Inanda, north of Durban on Tuesday afternoon.

The inquest proceedings dealt with the deaths of Solomon Nyirenda, Yvonne Mnisi and Pretty Nkambule. They died during the Lily Mine collapse on 5 February 2016 in Barberton, Mpumalanga. The inquest identifies illegal mining as one of the contributing causes.

The South African Police Service took control of the situation at Gold One Modder East Mine in Springs, east of Johannesburg.
